4. Tre Herndon – cornerback – Jacksonville Jaguars

Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon isn’t a precisely unknown commodity. An undrafted free agent in 2018, he moved up the depth chart and has started 26 games over the last two years. Also, he didn’t miss a game in 2020, which is something worth recognizing, as injuries have hit hard Jacksonville’s secondary in recent seasons. The team’s brass has taken steps this offseason to make sure they have enough depth in 2021. They signed Shaquill Griffin in free agency and drafted Tyson Campbell in this year’s selection meeting.

The newcomers, along with sophomore C.J. Henderson, are rightfully getting plenty of attention. However, Herndon is making a strong case to have a feature role this upcoming season. Last year, he played 306 snaps in the slot and 531 out wide. Before all the additions the Jags made to the cornerback room earlier this year, the former Commodore was a candidate to start at nickel in 2021. That remains the case after a strong showing in veteran minicamp.

Griffin recently had a sitdown with the local media and said Herndon is the player he goes to when he has doubts. The former Seattle Seahawks cornerback also described him as someone who is trying to get better every single day. Herndon signed a one-year contract with the Jags this offseason, which means he will become a free agent in 2022. If he plays well, he will get paid by the Jags or someone else and that should incentivize him to have a career year.
