The 2021 NFL Draft is just a couple of days away and with all the free-agent signings and trades that have been made, we can make some better guesses on what direction the Jacksonville Jaguars will go, especially early. For that reason, this mock draft will expand to seven rounds.

With the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select:

No. 1 – Trevor Lawrence, quarterback, Clemson.

Urban Meyer: “I’d have to say that’s the direction we’re going”. That’s what the Jags head coach told Peter King of NBC Sports when asked about selecting Lawrence with the first overall pick, so we can all quit speculating – this Jacksonville team gets their franchise quarterback.

No.2 – The New York Jets select Zach Wilson, quarterback, BYU.

Zach Wilson lit it up at his pro day. Of course, so did Sam Darnold three years ago. The ‘Gang Green’ are hoping the BYU standout will have the intangibles to perform better than Darnold.

No. 3 – The San Francisco 49ers (trade with Miami) selects Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State.

The 49ers traded up from the 12th spot and gave the Dolphins first- and third-round picks in 2022 and another first-round selection in 2023. You don’t do that for any position other than quarterback, the question is which one? Mac Jones of Alabama, Justin Fields of Ohio State, or Trey Lance of North Dakota State? The Niners seemed to be leaning toward Jones initially, but after a second pro day with head coach Kyle Shanahan in attendance, Lance moved ahead.

The top skill-position players get their names called.

No. 4 – The Atlanta Falcons select Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida.

There are a number of experts who have the Falcons selecting a quarterback with this pick and they might if they really like one of the two top signal-callers left after the top three are selected first, second, and third overall. The guess here is that they stick with Matt Ryan and look to improve their offense. They held big leads in numerous games but couldn’t keep them, the Philadelphia native will help them change that.

No. 5 – The Cincinnati Bengals select Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon.

The Cincinnati Bengal have to protect franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. If Trevor Lawrence is the biggest “no-brainer” in this year’s draft, Penei Sewell is second on the list.

No. 6 – The Miami Dolphins (trade with Philadelphia) select Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama.

The Miami Dolphins have five picks in the top 100, so they’ll have the opportunity to fill other needs. This may a bit of a surprise as some draft experts have Miami picking Ja’Marr Chase, but Waddle is the choice.

No. 7 – The Detroit Lions select Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU.

The Detriot Lions swapped quarterbacks with the Los Angeles Rams and they need new weapons for signal-caller Jared Goff. The Lions end up getting themselves one who is considered possibly the top wideout in this year’s draft.

No. 8 – The Carolina Panthers selects Mac Jones, QB, Alabama.

After trading up, the 49ers threw a wrench in the Carolina Panthers’ plans, as they may have been targeting Trey Lance with this pick. Teddy Bridgewater didn’t pan out the way the Carolina Panthers had hoped, so they traded with the Jets for quarterback Sam Darnold. The Panthers take Jones and groom him to be their starting signal-caller.

No. 9 – The Denver Broncos select Justin Fields, QB, Ohio St.

The Denver Bronco’s biggest need is at cornerback and they have the opportunity to get the best one in the draft at number nine overall. But having Justin Fields fall to them is a gift they can’t pass up.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars wait for their turn to pick again.

No. 10 – The Dallas Cowboys select Rashawn Slater, OT, Northwestern.

The Dallas Cowboys have paid Dak Prescott a lot of money, so they need someone to protect him and Rashawn Slater may be the best offensive tackles in the draft.

No. 11 – The New York Giants select DaVonta Smith, WR, Alabama.

The New Giants get one of the top wide receivers in this year’s draft for Daniel Jones and the offense.

No. 12 – The Philadelphia Eagles (trade with Miami via San Francisco) select Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama.

The Philadelphia Eagles have several needs on defense that they have to address and getting the best cornerback gets them started.

No. 13 – The Los Angeles Chargers select: Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina.

The Los Angeles Chargers need offensive line help but they’re not going to pass up one of the best cornerbacks in the draft.

No. 14 – The Minnesota Vikings select Wyatt Davis, OL, Ohio St.

The Minnesota Vikings are another team with several needs, but they addressed their most pressing ones in free agency. Wyatt Davis fills a need they didn’t get in free agency.

No. 15 – The New England Patriots select Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida.

The New England Patriots addressed all of their most pressing needs in free agency, and they added depth at multiple positions. Now they have the luxury to pick whoever they want…and they want more weapons.

No. 16 – The Arizona Cardinals select Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech.

The Arizona Cardinals have a couple of needs on both offense and defense. They are doing cartwheels that one of the top cornerbacks dropped all the way down to this spot.

No. 17 – Las Vegas selects: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn St.

The Raiders are notorious for going offense early in the draft and since they’ve done that a lot over the last few years, they get to pick the best linebacker in the draft.

No. 18 – Miami selects; Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame.

The Dolphins address their greatest need with one of the top linebackers. This pick is a good value at this spot.

No. 19 – The Washington Football Team selects Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech.

The Washington Football Team picks a left tackle to protect their 37-year old quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Jacksonville Jaguars
TCU Horned Frogs safety Trevon Moehrig #7 (Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports)

The Jaguars add talent to their secondary at 25.

No. 20 – The Chicago Bears select Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota.

The top quarterbacks are gone. After signing Andy Dalton to a one-year contract the Bears go after another offensive weapon.

No. 21 – The Indianapolis Colts select Samuel Cosmi, OT, Texas.

The Colts value a strong offensive line and they get an offensive tackle to protect their new quarterback, Carson Wentz.

No. 22 – Tennessee selects Gregory Rousseau, DE, Alabama.

Who would have thought the first edge rusher to come off the board would be all the way down at pick 22? The Tennessee Titans aren’t complaining.

No. 23 – The Jets select Asante Samuel, CB, FSU.

The New York Jets were busy in free agency and signed a number of players to fill needs. Getting one of the top cornerbacks at 23 is very good value.

No. 24 – Pittsburgh selects: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama.

The Pittsburgh Steelers get the running back they need to balance their offense. Harris is a very good pick.

No. 25 – The Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU.

Jacksonville was active early in free agency and addressed their most pressing needs by signing several veterans. They need a pass-catching tight end but this spot is probably a little high and they have two picks early in the second round. They should get a quality one on Day 2. The Jaguars fill another need with this pick by landing the top safety in this year’s draft.

No. 26 – The Cleveland Browns select Kwity Paye, DE, Michigan.

The Browns need help at cornerback also, but defensive end makes sense here, and Kwity Paye is a good one.

No. 27 – The Baltimore Ravens select Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue.

The Baltimore Ravens add another weapon to their potent offense.

No. 28 – The New Orleans Saints select Azeez Ojulari, LB, Georgia.

The New Orleans Saints have a bigger need at cornerback, but with the run on the position earlier in this round, they’ll look to round two to fill that need. Adding Azeez Ojulari at linebacker is the smart move here.

No. 29 – The Green Bay Packers select Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa.

The Green Bay Packers went heavy defense in last year’s draft. Aaron Rodgers needs more offensive weapons, but he’ll have to wait until later. The Packers bolster their defense.

No. 30 – The Buffalo Bills select Alijah Vera-Tucker, OL, USC.

The Buffalo Bills have a couple of positions on both sides of the ball they need to address, and getting an offensive lineman here to protect their franchise quarterback is a good value at 30.

No. 31 – Baltimore selects Joseph Ossai, DE, Texas.

The Ravens figure they need someone to infuse some talent in their defense.

No. 32 – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select: Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama.

The Buccaneers return all twenty-two starters from their Super Bowl-winning team, so they have the luxury of selecting whoever they want and get the top defensive tackle in this year’s draft.

That concludes the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Penn State TE Pat Freiermuth #87 (Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports)

The Jacksonville Jaguars add talent to both sides of the ball on Day 2.

The Jaguars finally address their biggest need and take Pat Freiermuth with the first pick in the second round. They also fortify their defensive front with the addition of USC standout Jay Tufele.

No. 35 – Atlanta selects Richie Grant, S, UCF.

No. 56 – Seattle selects Creed Humphrey, C, Oklahoma. Seattle uses their first pick in the draft to get help for Russell Wilson on the offensive line.

No. 57 – LA Rams select: Nick Bolton, LB, Missouri. The Rams use their first pick in the draft on one of their biggest needs.

No. 58 – Kansas City selects Deonte Brown, OL, Alabama. Baltimore uses their first pick to get some help on the O-Line for Lamar Jackson.

No. 65 – The Jaguars slect Jabril Cox, LB, LSU.

No. 66 – The Jets select Hamsah Nasirildeen, WR, USC.

No. 67 – The Houston Texans select Shaun Wade, CB, Ohio St. The Texans use their first pick in this year’s draft to shore up a defense that has gone downhill over the last few years. Shaun Wade is good value here early in the fourth round – he could have gone in the second.

No. 68 – The Falcons select Joe Tyron, DE, Washington.
