Should Jayson Oweh’s lack of sacks concern the Jacksonville Jaguars?

The Jaguars lack defensive line depth in 2020, which makes their decision to add reinforcements this offseason understandable. Also, defensive end Josh Allen should be healthy after dealing with a knee injury that limited to eight games last season and K’Lavon Chaisson should keep trending up after finishing his rookie season on a high note.

Nevertheless, Jacksonville could use another pass-rusher and they could take one with their second first-round selection. Since there isn’t a sure-fire top defensive end in the draft, one or two of the top prospects could fall to the Jags’ lap, including Jayson Oweh.

A four-star prospect out of high school, Oweh showcased his pash-rushing prowess throughout his collegiate career with the Nittany Lions and recently put his athleticism on display on Penn State’s Pro Day. Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes the New Jersey native saw his draft stock rise after running a 4.36 40-yard dash and registering a 39.5-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 11-feet, two inches.

Oweh’s 13 percent run stop rate was the highest among edge defenders in 2020. Moreover, his 85.3 Pro Football Focus grade ranked eight and his run grade was the second-best last season. On the other hand, his low sack totals could raise concerns during the evaluation process. In 20 games, he registered a measly seven sacks. While the tools and the athleticism are there, the production isn’t, which could give the Jaguars a pause.
