The Jacksonville Jaguars lacked both talent and depth last offseason, so you wouldn’t have been alone if you thought they should be aggressive when it came to getting playmakers this offseason. However, they haven’t made splash signings yet and have opted to add depth on the first day of the legal tampering period instead.
So far, the Jaguars’ brass has opted to re-sign their own players and add role players. You could argue Carlos Hyde won’t have a high impact in 2021 but the fact of the matter is he doesn’t have to. James Robinson the team’s workhorse running back and Hyde will be his backup. The same is true for many of the free agents the team has brought in.
Defensive end Duwane Smoot is back with the team, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, but he will be part of the Jaguars’ defensive line rotation rather than a featured player with Josh Allen returning to the lineup and K’Lavon Chaisson ready for a bigger role in 2021.
On the other hand, Jacksonville had a shot at players such as tight end Jonnu Smith, defensive end Trey Hendrickson and safety Josh Johnson but decided to stay put. Maybe they did pursue them but opted not to pay top-market money for them.
Regardless of the reason, the Jaguars have focused on fortifying their roster but they still have the chance to make a couple of big-name signings. After all, it’s been just one day and there are still plenty of players available in the free-agent market. Here are the best five.
