Jacksonville Jaguars: The argument for hiring Jim Harbaugh as HC
Jim Harbaugh’s style may not be a good fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Harbaugh has received the ‘quarterback guru’ label due to his work with signal-callers. He helped Andrew Luck become the best quarterback in college football in 2011 and solidify his place as the first overall pick in 2012’s draft. In San Francisco, he got the most out of Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick, but it seems like his magic touch has run out.
In Michigan, Harbaugh hasn’t been able to find or develop a quarterback. Moreover, there’s a belief his offensive philosophy and play-making are outdated, per Brandon Brown of Sports Illustrated. For someone who is known for his work with quarterbacks, that is rather worrisome.
However, the biggest thing working against Harbaugh is his personality. He’s had a penchant for wearing out his welcome anywhere he’s gone and his ultra-competitive and abrasive style can be taxing for others. Former offensive lineman Alex Boone says the head coach wore out his welcome in San Francisco, as he wanted, demanded, and expected too much from everybody.
Harbaugh himself has admitted his personality and drive to succeed can be overwhelming, but is that really a negative trait? Sure, it can be an unpleasant experience to be around a person who is mostly concerned about results, but if the end goal is achieved, in this case winning games, is it really a bad thing? The Jaguars will have to think of that in their next head coaching search.
