Letting Javon Kinlaw Get Away

I know there is plenty of reasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars to take Florida cornerback C.J. Henderson with the ninth pick in the NFL Draft, but the thought all along by local and national analysts has been the defensive line, mainly the interior, was the team’s biggest weakness.

Derek Brown was taken by the Carolina Panthers, two spots ahead of Jacksonville, so the team missed out on the best interior lineman in the Draft, but could have taken Javon Kinlaw from South Carolina with the ninth pick instead of Henderson and possibly jumped back into the first round to grab either a pass rusher or a defensive back with an additional pick.

This isn’t an indictment on Henderson and his play, although I still question the selection. The secondary has been addressed just like every other phase of the defense.

Kinlaw may take time to develop, but he was worth the gamble. For a team that couldn’t stop the run, getting as many bodies to seal the spaces in between the guard is crucial to the defense. Even with Todd Wash changing part of his scheme to a 3-4 defense this season, having Kinlaw and his raw talent would have made sense.
