The Jacksonville Jaguars have played significantly better as a team over the course of the last 4 weeks, which curiously enough coincides with the switch to Blake Bortles as the starting quarterback.
While it’s naive to think Bortles is the sole reason for the Jaguars improved play, especially given his level of play in the last couple of outings, he has certainly provided a spark on offense and made the team much more watchable.
With his turnover issues in the last few weeks, it’s no surprise to see Bortles near the bottom of Lyle Graversen’s weekly quarterback rankings. He has Bortles coming in at 30.
30. Blake Bortles – Jacksonville Jaguars (+1)
Blake Bortles moves up one spot from last week thanks to Vick and Mettenberger making their debuts at the bottom of the list. Bortles has to stop turning the ball over before he can climb much higher up these rankings. The talent is there, but patience will be needed.
Of the rookies who are currently starting, Bortles has had significantly more costly mistakes than Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater. While the fluky nature of an interception being returned for a touchdown should be considered here, it’s hard to ignore how much Bortles has set the team back in games with his mistakes.
As Lyle notes, the talent is definitely there with Bortles. His issues seem to be fixable, and we should see incremental process moving forward. One of these weeks everything is going to click with Bortles, and he’s bound to have a huge game soon given the emergence of the young wide receivers.
