According to Mike Detillier of M&D Draft Report brought to us by ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky, Damontre Moore makes sense as a second overall pick. For a team that finished last in the league in sacks this makes sense. Moore, an outside linebacker transitioned to defensive end, has been outstanding in both the Big 12 and SEC with Texas A&M.

Moore has 26.5 sacks, 44 tackles for a loss, and 192 total tackles in his three college seasons. He had 12.5 sacks, 20 tackles for a loss, and 80 tackles in his latest season for the Aggies. He has also had eight forced fumbles during his career. His ability to get to the quarterback against tough competition should raise attention for the Jaguars. The team desperately needs a force that can penetrate the offensive line consistently in order to generate pressure. It became obvious in 2012 that the Jeremy Mincey, Andre Branch/Jason Babin/Austen Lane combination was not getting the job done.

According to Detillier,

The Jaguars need to add a quality pass rusher at defensive end and Moore is the best of this group and a tremendous overall athlete and football player. He was a dominant player in the toughest conference in college football this past season.

Detillier goes on to say that he has DeMarcus Ware type abilities to boot. For a team that desperately needs someone to start making big plays, Moore makes absolute sense. Moore has shown steady development during his time in college. As the game has grown for him, his play has grown. There seems to be no reason why he wouldn’t be able to make the jump to the NFL. Why not go for a superb athlete with a proven track record? Whoever takes over for Gene Smith will have to ask that question a lot when considering other people over Moore.
