Surprise, surprise, the Jags need a right tackle. Players like Eben Britton, Cameron Bradfield, and Guy Whimper have all been tried there in recent years, but with no success. Heading into the draft, the Jags find themselves still looking for a right tackle to play for them.

When asked who would be starting at right tackle for the Jaguars if they played tomorrow, GM Dave Caldwell responded, “That’s a good question. Good thing we don’t play tomorrow.”

To me, that sounds like the Jags will be in the market for a right tackle. Whether that comes in free agency or in the draft, the current crop of guys on the roster are obviously not part of that “good core” the team keeps going on about. Bradfield flashed some talent on occasion in 2012, but he is obviously not the answer at the position. Meanwhile, Guy Whimper has failed and “earned” a completely undeserved $1 million+ contract from ex-GM Gene Smith. It’s about time the Jags moved past what they have and brought in someone new.

Might I suggest blazing fast rookie Terron Armstead?

The tight ends, offensive linemen, and special teams all went through their workouts on Saturday. Some headlines were made and others weren’t, but like all things any press is good press, right? Even if you don’t do so hot. Well, we’re here to focus on the guys who did help their draft stock. Here are your winners from the first workout day of the combine:

Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas Pine Bluff

Raise your hand if you even knew there was a school in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I didn’t even know it was a place until I saw Armstead run. Armstead ran the 40 yard dash in a ridiculously good (unofficial) 4.65. The 6’4″ 306 pound lineman can really fly and brought all eyes to him during the first day of workouts. 40 times don’t matter as much for offensive linemen, but man did it turn the attention. It may be tough to top Armstead coming out of nowhere to steal the spotlight.

Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

A lineman who has been rising on draft boards already, Johnson did a good job of impressing with his overall athleticism. Having been a tight end before transitioning to offensive line, Johnson has athletic ability that many of the big boys up front simply don’t have. Perhaps the best proof of that was his 40 yard dash time which came in at a quick 4.75.

Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame

Not working out until Monday, Te’o has managed to sneak back into the headlines. As mentioned before, all press is good press. The Te’o hoax may continue to steal the show enough for everyone to overlook Te’o disappearing in the National Championship against Alabama. He should ride the attention and try to put up some average numbers to go with it. He has successfully gotten all eyes back on him, now he needs to follow through.
