The Jacksonville Jaguars could really use a quarterback upgrade. Not many of us Jags fans are holding our breath on Blaine Gabbert as he enters year three. Well, GM Dave Caldwell may be and it’s because he’s sticking to his guns. Before the 2013 NFL Draft, Caldwell said that he was going to be drafting for need. Luke Joeckel was a need pick at round one. Round two promises to be the same. Reporter Mark Long confirmed that there would be no quarterback for Jacksonville in Round two when he tweeted, “Jaguars have NO plans to draft a QB at No. 33.”

With the Jaguars focusing on other players, the field really opens up. There is always the opportunity for a quarterback in round three, but if the Jags don’t take one in round two then they could really do some good by filling holes on the roster. Strong safety comes to mind with first-round talent Jonathan Cyprien still on the board. If the Jaguars trade back I really like Barrett Jones and his versatility along the offensive line. Outside linebacker is a mess and the Jags could pick someone like Cornelius Washington or Sio Moore in round two, which could be reaches but would address need.

While we won’t know what the Jaguars do until they do it, knowing that a quarterback is off the table really opens things up for them. The speculation will be rampant until the dust settles later tonight.

Mike Mayock published his top 100 prospect rankings on Tuesday. For a guy that makes his living on guessing how good young men with freakish talent will be at translating their athleticism into the speed and finesse of pro football, listing the top 100 is big. Does he get some wrong every year? Yeah. We all do.

Drafts definitely don’t follow top 100 lists. Teams draft based on need, potential, schematic fit, and a whole host of other reasons. But for the fun of it, and because this may come out as close as any other mock draft gets, I’m going to take every player in his top 100 at a Jacksonville Jaguars pick and mock it to them. Check here for the full list. Let’s see how it turns out:

Round 1, pick 2) Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

Round 2, pick 33) Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M

Round 3, pick 64) Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut

Round 4, pick 98) Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU

With the Jags GM Dave Caldwell looking for starters and value, this mock comes out alright. Floyd and Moore make the Jaguars go from a weak defensive front to almost having a logjam at all positions. Floyd would join Tyson Alualu, Roy Miller, and Sen’Derrick Marks as a formidable foursome at defensive tackle. All four offer versatility which would enable the Jaguars to use a lot of different schemes.

The scheming possibilities open up even more with the second round pick of Damontre Moore. Moore, if motivated, could be a force at defensive end. At 33 overall they are getting a talent that some thought was a top-10 lock early in the pre-draft season. Moore would not fill the LEO position in Gus Bradley’s hybrid defense but he would definitely bring some much needed pass rushing talent.

Feb 23, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Connecticut Huskies linebacker Sio Moore speaks at a press conference during the 2013 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Credit: Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Sio Moore is a great pick and I am ridiculously pleased that he lined up with the Jaguars in Mayock’s top 100 prospects. The Jags desperately need help at outside linebacker and Moore is impressive. He has all the physical tools you want and seems to have a high motor. I’m actually surprised Moore isn’t higher in Mayock’s listings. The NFL Combine was the coming out party for the Connecticut player but his popularity has slid a little since then.

The Jaguars find great value and an instant starter with The Honey Badger in round four. Mathieu has some serious character concerns and some motivation issues but he has talent. He would instantly bring some attitude to the Jaguars and he could start immediately. He isn’t a schematic fit for Gus Bradley’s defense, however, at just 5’9″ but has decent arm length (31 1/8″ compared to Seattle’s 6’3″ Richard Sherman at 32″). Here the Jaguars get a guy who plays bigger than he is.

Overall, I think the first four rounds come out pretty well for the Jaguars following Mayock’s top prospects. Floyd and Moore are fantastic picks I would enjoy seeing the Jaguars draft. I have concerns about Moore but believe that he could be turned into something special by defensive line coach Todd Wash. His motivation problems will likely disappear with the engaging and contagiously energetic approach of head coach Gus Bradley. Mathieu is obviously the wildcard in this but he would be tough to pass up in the fourth round if he was there. I bet even Bradley would be willing to let the size slide if he and Caldwell felt they could get Mathieu to be a consistent playmaker who pours everything into the game and avoids off-field problems.

How do you guys think this “for fun” mock turned out?

Much like Cornelius Washington, Sio Moore will be rising up draft boards following the NFL Combine. Moore has been rising up boards since the East-West Shrine game and he could make a serious bid as a potential replacement for Jacksonville Jaguars OLB Daryl Smith, if he walks in free agency. With the Jags needing linebacker help, Moore could be an immediate second round help.

Moore impressed during his time at UConn, but really impressed at the combine. If teams hadn’t noticed during his time at the Shrine Game, they will now. Moore was among the top performers in bench press (29 reps), 40 yard dash (4.65), vertical (38 inches), and broad jump (127 inches).

As the Jags build for the future in GM Dave Caldwell’s first season, Moore could be a player that contributes immediately or in the long haul. We’ll have to see if Caldwell judges outside linebacker to be a big enough need to spend a second round pick on it in the 2013 NFL Draft.
