The New York Jets came into Jacksonville and handed them another loss on Sunday. The game was never in much doubt with the Jets ahead by 14 early in the fourth quarter. The Jags scored with seven minutes left but couldn’t come back.

The Jets were very effective running the ball against a porous Jaguar defensive line. Shonn Greene and Bilal Powell combined for 155 yards on the ground, a full 44 yards more than Mark Sanchez threw during the game. The strategy for success continued to work for the Jets as they controlled the ball for more than half of the time and also managed to put pressure on the Jaguars.

Mark Sanchez finished 12/19 for 111 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. It was mistake free football for a quarterback that desperately needs to get things going again or risk “not Sanchez” replacing him at some point. The Jags game wasn’t impressive for Sanchez, but it also showed that he is not always a liability to his team.

On the other side of the ball, Chad Henne had his second poor showing in two weeks. Henne finished 21/43 for 185 yards and two interceptions. The Jaguar rushing attack was working well behind Montell Owens who had 91 yards on 14 carries and Richard Murphy who racked up 19 yards on four carries. The Jaguars felt pressed to pass, however, and had another poor outing. Justin Blackmon was decently effective without Cecil Shorts III opposite him with 57 yards on six receptions. Jordan Shipley continues to show that he was a good signing with five receptions for 55 yards.

The Jaguars were forced away from balance by the Jets offense. Despite a strong secondary, the Jaguars felt they needed to pass in order to catch up with the Jets. The strategy, obviously, did not work and the Jets managed to cruise to a nice win.

The Jets come to town to try and best the Jaguars at home. The Jags are coming off their first victory at home two weeks ago after a series of blowouts that left the home crowd sad, dejected, and more than a little mad. In this game a number of players will have to, or probably will, step up. Let’s take a peek at five players to watch on Sunday:

1. Kevin Elliott, WR, Jacksonville: Kevin Elliott should be getting considerably more reps at wide receiver with Cecil Shorts III out. As receivers have seemingly gone the way of the dinosaur for the Jaguars, Elliott will be the second most productive wide receiver for the Jaguars entering Sunday’s game. He will need to play way out of his mind if he wants to fill Shorts’ big shoes in the game. If he plays well then this receiving unit may just have more depth than anticipated. Behing Elliott are three receivers who have all been signed in the last three weeks. He really needs to step up for the Jags to be successful through the air.

2. Eben Britton, G, Jacksonville: Eben Britton will get his first start in a while due to the injury to undrafted free agent starter Mike Brewster who edged him out for the spot earlier this year. Britton has been underperforming during his time on the field this season so it will be curious to see if he can up his game and push to stay on this roster if a new GM rolls into town (or if Gene Smith stays I suppose). Britton will be playing for his job and it would be nice to see some development along the interior of the offensive line.

3. Antonio Cromartie, CB, New York: The Jets feature some pretty solid secondary players even without Darrelle Revis. Cromartie has been a near expert at his craft for some time and is having a decent season in New York. He is the leading man in interceptions on a very good passing defense. If anybody can make Chad Henne look bad for the second week in a row, it will be Cromartie. He will also limit either Justin Blackmon or Kevin Elliott, whomever he happens to be on.

4. Justin Blackmon, WR, Jacksonville: Can the Jaguars’ passing offense succeed without Cecil Shorts? Blackmon will be the key to that. He has been made a non-factor too many times this season, but this time there won’t be another good receiver starting to help bail him and the team out. Blackmon will have to assert his presence more and win the battles against defenders in order to help the passing offense. Chad Henne will need some help and Blackmon is the most likely source to help him out, but the question remains, can he do it?

5. Shonn Greene, RB, New York: Greene comes into the game against the Jaguars as a very good indicator for success with the Jets. As Greene goes, so do the Jets. They are going to look to assert the run and try to get ball control and constant movement on offense. Greene is the Jets’ man. The Jaguars have a horrendous rushing defense so the yardage could go through the roof for Greene in this game. Keep an eye and see if the Jets are getting him enough reps to grind down the Jaguars.

Editor’s Note: Being a part of the Fansided Network, we have the opportunity to interact with the other NFL sites that can give us insight into their teams. Before each game we will be providing you with a quick questionnaire that the opposition’s site editor has provided us.

This week we have the opportunity to talk to The Jet Press editor Alan Schechter who took the time to answer five questions for us here at B&T.

Let’s get a little taste of the New York Jets before Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

1) How do Jets fans feel about Mark Sanchez getting the start over McElroy or Tebow?

Nobody really thought that Tebow was going to get the start. They haven’t used him at all so far, in any real role other than the personal punt protector, there was no reason to believe they were going to start now. As far as the other two, fans are not happy about going back to Mark Sanchez. Some want McElroy because he is “not Sanchez”, while others want to see him to see what we have. They are all but out of the playoff race, and we know what we have in Mark Sanchez. But, the way the Jets operate, nobody is really shocked by the decision, just disappointed.

2) The rushing offense for the Jets has been a good indicator of success for the team, how do you think Shonn Greene will do against the Jags D?

The Jets have been getting the running game on the right track of late, even in losses, and I think that will continue here. Being ranked 31st in the NFL against the run as the Jags are may be just what the doctor ordered. You aren’t going to just see Shonn Greene, the Jets have been showing a lot of Bilal Powell, as well as a sprinkling of Joe McKnight. I think the running game will perform well on Sunday.

3) 5-7 is definitely not where the Jets want to be, what has been going wrong this season?

Well, it starts with injuries. Losing Santonio Holmes on offense has been backbreaking to the team. Losing Revis didn’t exactly hurt, but the defense has rebounded pretty well. The Jets haven’t had their number one weapons available, and the quarterback play has been downright awful at times. Mark Sanchez has been inconsistent, partially because he has been undermined with the lack of weapons and with Tim Tebow on the team, partially from simply making bad decisions. Bad quarterback play spreads like a virus through the entire offense. The defense has been good, but the offense simply hasn’t out up enough points.

4) How warm is Rex Ryan’s seat? Are fans and decision makers starting to grow weary of Ryan?

I would say that Rex’s seat is warm at best. I truthfully don’t see him losing his job this year, I belive the Jets will bring him back one more time. He will be able to put a lot of the blame on Mike Tannenbaum, who most of us believe will lose his job first.

5) How do you think this matchup will play out on Sunday?

I think the Jets will take this one fairly easily. It won’t be an explosion of points, something like a 17-10 affair.

We’ll see if the Jets handle the Jags fairly easily. A big thank you to Alan and The Jet Press for the conversation!
