The second week of the fantasy football season is already upon us, so millions of people will be setting their lineups over the next several days.  Before hitting the submit button on your lineup, make sure to check out my week 2 fantasy football players to start and sit:

QB Andy Dalton, CIN (vs. CLE) – The sophomore will look much better against the depleted Browns’ secondary this weekend.

RB Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG (vs. TB) – Last week Bradshaw showed that he is the new number one back in New York, so expect a giant performance from him against a lack-luster Bucs’ defense.

WR DeSean Jackson, PHI (vs. BAL) – The Ravens’ defensive backs are not getting any younger, so Philadelphia will be utilizing Jackson’s speed all game long.

TE Jared Cook, TEN (@SD) – Cook is an amazing athlete, and the youngster will terrorize the Chargers’ aging linebackers this weekend.

IDP: Kyle Arrington, NE (vs. ARI) – With Arizona likely turning back to Kevin Kolb as the starter this weekend, expect the New England secondary to have more than a couple chances to pick off some passes.

Guys to Sit:

QB Joe Flacco, BAL (@PHI) – After one miracle week, many people have already voted for Flacco into the 2012 Pro Bowl.  Just wait until after he plays the aggressive Philadelphia Eagles’ defense until you vote.

RB Jonathan Dwyer, PIT (vs. NYJ) – Dwyer had the best week one performance among all the Pittsburgh running backs.  However,  it will obviously be a running-back-by-committee offense in the Steel City, so be hesitant to start any of the team’s running backs.

WR Robert Meachem, SD (vs. TEN) – Rivers loves to spread the ball around, but he may not look Meachem’s way too often with standout corner, Jason McCourty, blanketing the new number one receiver.

TE Brandon Pettigrew, DET (@SF) – The “Teachers Pet” will be taken to school this weekend by Patrick Willis and the boys.

IDP: Calais Campbell, ARI – Campbell will have a tough time getting to New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, this weekend.

With Colston gone, the Jag should take a hard look at Meachem.

Meachem, a first round pick in the 2007 draft, has been able to contribute with the prolific Saints passing attack for four seasons now.  While not as prolific as Colston, Meachem fills a vital role as a strong speed threat.  At 6’2″, 214 pounds he also provides a bit more “oomph” behind his plays.

Meachem has averaged only 6.25 starts over the past four seasons.  And he’s never posted above 722 yards in a season.  His career high came in 2009, a full two years back.  One would expect receivers to perform better in a wildly aggressive passing attack down in New Orleans.  Instead, Meachem has practically posted pedestrian numbers.

I think that, given the opportunity, Meachem could perform as a surefire #2 receiver for the Jags.

Meachem has very good hands, a gift for field awareness, and is young enough to enable the Jags to look toward older wide receivers if they need a “band aid” to get by for the next few seasons.

With the crazy amount of drops the Jaguars suffered from this past year, it’s hard not to believe that Blaine Gabbert is getting down on himself.  Meachem provides a reliable target and veteran experience on a good passing team.  The Jags can probably grab Meachem for cheap as his stock probably won’t rise much even with the departure of other top-flight wide receivers as free agency pans out.

Colston was a top target for the Jags in free agency and looked to command a lot of attention from the team.  Many talking heads thought that his potential could extend to other teams and the Jaguars were widely thought to be potential suitors to the wide receiver.

Alas, it is not to be.  Perhaps the Jaguars will shift to Robert Meachem, the other Saints receiver expected to hit free agency.

Or the Jaguars may just hunker down and wait for the draft.  With the removal of Colston from the market, the Jaguars can focus their cap room on resigning DE Jeremy Mincey at a higher price if he demands it, and Safety Dwight Lowery becomes much less of a luxury and more of a practical acquisition.
