It’s hard to truly know what’s in another man’s heart. As fans, we think we know these players, but there are entire sagas played out in the privacy of the locker room that we are not privileged to. I will not say with complete conviction that I think David Garrard had given up in Jacksonville, but I will say that I noticed some unwelcome changes with David that signaled to me things were changing for the worse. (more…)

Cruising around the web today, I noticed a reader commented with the term “franchise quarterback”. This is a term that has often bothered me. When should it really be used? How does one actually define the franchise quarterback? Most use it as a description for a quarterback that is above-average and participates in multiple playoff games. Granted, that’s not what they’re thinking when they say that, but it is the end result and by these regards, I would label current Jaguars QB David Garrard a “franchise quarterback”. Is he deserving?

Let’s define it.

TJ Yates will not be up for first-round consideration by any team. Yates, however, is a 4-year starter who broke North Carolina’s single-season passing record as a freshman with 2,655 yards and 14 TD’s. (link)

NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt on Yates:

“I do believe that if you give him an opportunity, I do think Yates has a chance to be somebody that’s pretty good,” said NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt, who projects the 6-foot-3 passer from Georgia as a seventh-round pick. “He’s got size. He’s smart. He doesn’t have a really great arm, but there’s a lot of people in this league that don’t have really great arms. And I think [UNC offensive coordinator John] Shoop, I think he’s done a pretty good job of developing him.” (link)
