Cruising around the web today, I noticed a reader commented with the term “franchise quarterback”. This is a term that has often bothered me. When should it really be used? How does one actually define the franchise quarterback? Most use it as a description for a quarterback that is above-average and participates in multiple playoff games. Granted, that’s not what they’re thinking when they say that, but it is the end result and by these regards, I would label current Jaguars QB David Garrard a “franchise quarterback”. Is he deserving?

Let’s define it.

The Jaguars won their opening game for the 1st time since 2006. Was Denver a good team? I am not sure but the real test will come this Sunday. Jack Del Rio and his players are heading West to clash with the San Diego Chargers. Although Norv Turner and his team lost on Monday, don’t even think this will be an easy game. I still consider San Diego to be the main favorite to win the AFC West for the 5th time in a row. But this does not mean they don’t have weak points. I will give you some places where the Jaguars might have advantage.

<img class="aligncenter" style="border: 0px;" title="San Diego Chargers v Jacksonville Jaguars" onmousedown="return false;" src="http://view4.picapp.com/pictures.photo/image/3307905/san-diego-chargers/san-diego-chargers.jpg?size=380&imageId=3307905" border="0" alt="JACKSONVILLE, FL - NOVEMBER 18: Philip Rivers #17 of the San Diego Chargers throws a pass over Grady Jackson #90 of the Jacksonville Jaguars at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on November 18, 2007 in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Chargers run defense is shaky. Jamaal Charles had 8.4 yards average per carry against them; including a 56 yard long TD. Antonio Garay and Luis Castillo are very good players but I think the Jaguars can run toward Jacques Cesaire and the interior LB unit very effectively. Maurice Jones-Drew had a solid game against the Broncos but he needs to show more of his phenomenal ability in San Diego. He can/must(?) have a 100+ yard game to have the Jaguars any chance for something big.

Phillip Rivers can't control his temper and composure.
This is the kind of temper tantrum I want to see on Sunday. My hopes are that Derrick Harvey and Aaron Kampman and Tyson Alualu get in his face all day and really aggravate him. A few picks would help the cause as well.

Meanwhile, having David Garrard calmly pick apart the Chargers defense and watching Maurice run free would help the cause as well.

Of course, Kassim Osgood waving to his old coach after a great play would be fun to see as well.

I am enjoying the thoughts of a Jaguar victory.
