In the last installment of their NFL Mock Draft coverage, Fansided.com has given the Jaguars their own highlight. The subject of that highlight is Oregon defensive end/outside linebacker Dion Jordan. Jordan is often mocked to the Jaguars so it makes sense that Fansided got on the bandwagon just in time for the draft.

Here’s what writer Josh Sanchez had to say about the pick:

Jacksonville needs pass rushing help and there is no pass rusher in this year’s draft class with more upside than Jordan. Not only can Jordan rush the pass, he has the ability to line up in the slot and drop back in coverage.

Jordan is a player that can come in from day one and immediately play the LEO position at a high level.

There is the possibility that Jacksonville could look to trade out of the position or look to draft the best offensive tackle available, but the most likely scenario is the Jaguars will go with one of the biggest play makers on the defensive side of the ball. If Jacksonville wants to pull a fast one and shock the world with their pick, you can never rule out quarterback Geno Smith.

The chance that the Jaguars select quarterback Geno Smith appears smaller and smaller with each passing day so that really would be a shock at this point. While Jordan is in no way a lock to the Jaguars at number two, he seems the most likely pick at this point. We’ll obviously be much wiser tonight after the first round concludes.

University of Oregon defensive end/outside linebacker Dion Jordan is projected to be a do it all outside linebacker in the NFL. He’s also widely projected to land with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL Draft’s first round. Because of Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley’s defensive schemes Jordan and the Jaguars would be a perfect marriage.

Jordan is a huge player at 6’6″ tall but moves much better than most athletes who are smaller than him. His fluid movement was an eye catcher at the NFL Scouting Combine and helped propel him into being a top-10 lock in the draft. The Combine confirmed that Jordan is more than just a pure pass rusher and could be a three down linebacker.

Always a top prospect, Jordan’s athleticism and ability to both rush the passer and play coverage are what make him so ideally suited to be with the Jaguars at number two. The Jags employ a hybrid defensive front that features the oft-cited Leo position. The Leo is a rushing linebacker/defensive end type who plays fast and is effective at getting to the quarterback. The Jags already have pass rushing specialist Jason Babin on the roster to fill the position, but Jordan offers more versatility and an ability to disguise the scheme. With Jordan’s ability to cover, rush the passer, and play the run he should be on the field constantly. This gives the Jaguars the ability to disguise what Jordan may do on a given down. For a talent-deficient roster, that’s big.

Jordan’s unique skill set and ideal match was highlighted in the Fansided Editors’ mock draft run by the National Football Post:

The Jags need to drastically upgrade their pass rush and Dion Jordan is an ideal fit as the Leo in Coach Bradley’s defense. Jordan has the ability to be productive both rushing the quarterback and defending against the run. The variety of coverage responsibilities makes him the perfect choice.

Having the privilege to select Jordan for the Jaguars, my reasoning was the same as that stated above by NFP’s Russ Lande. Jordan isn’t heads and shoulders above the rest of the pass rushing class in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he is the top all around player as well as a perfect schematic fit for the Jags. This makes him invaluable to the team and an easy selection later tonight.

The NFL Draft is here! Just a few hours away until all the teams make their first round selections and decide their futures. The 2013 NFL Draft is unique in that it still appears open. There are still questions about who each team will take with their selection(s). I think this is great as it provides a bit more intrigue to a lengthy, popular process.

Will Geno Smith be a top pick? Have the Chiefs decided on Luke Joeckel? Who’s looking to trade up? Are any of the three teams with multiple first round picks planning on shopping them? It all gets answered, for better or for worse, tonight at 8:00 PM EST. For now, please let the picks from B&T’s staff placate your desire to know who is going where. This is Black and Teal’s second “first round rumble” where the staff competes against each other to see who is the best at evaluating college prospects.
