The Tim Tebow question has come up again…and again…and again. The Jacksonville Jaguars just can’t escape the ex-University of Florida star who doesn’t really have a place in the NFL.

Tebow came up again this week as the New York Jets drafted West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Tebow quickly became an odd man out in New York and was cut on April 29th. The immediate speculation, for no legitimate basis whatsoever, was that Tebow would go to Jacksonville. Jacksonville may be close to where he played high school ball and the Florida Gators are close as well, but the prevailing thought that he and the Jaguars are a good fit is ridiculous.

General Manager Dave Caldwell said his infamous “even if he’s released” comment early in his tenure when talking about Tebow. He won’t be a part of the Jaguars organization. For some reason national media outlets and some social media pockets can’t seem to notice the team’s stance on the quarterback. Owner Shahid Khan had to respond yet again to Tebow mania on the 29th. In an email from Jim Woodcock, his spokesperson he said, “The Jacksonville Jaguars’ plans do not include Tim Tebow.”

If that isn’t emphatic enough, then I don’t know what is.

The Jaguars don’t have a need for him at fullback, tight end, or quarterback and he has been shunned by most NFL teams since selected by the Denver Broncos. If Tebow really has fixed his mechanics, I suggest he take a run at the CFL and see if he can show a new and improved arm for NFL teams to look at in a year or two. For now, he’ll be staying far away from Everbank Field.

The New York Jets are looking to trade their second round pick in order to move up and grab a quarterback, possibly West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. At least that’s what I’m hearing via the Twitterverse. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the most logical trading partner in round two if the Jets are looking to ensure they get their man.

The Jaguars hold pick number 33, the top pick in the second round. This makes the Jags’ pick the best pick in the round and truly the only pick that can guarantee Geno Smith or whichever quarterback the Jets want. Every pick after 33 has the potential to be the Jets’ coveted quarterback. Even pick 33 could be a quarterback, though it appears unlikely. The Arizona Cardinals, a quarterback needy team, pick one spot ahead of the Jets (38) though the Eagles also pick at 35 and could get Smith who could replace Vick after his contract ends this season.

So, should the Jaguars and Jets create the perfect second round trade? Absolutely. The Jaguars want more picks and moving back to #39 in round two isn’t going to hurt them too much as they look to add a cornerback, safety, outside linebacker, guard, or pretty much any other position on a football team. Because the Jaguars are desperate for players, they may be willing to settle for less value in the trade than another team.

Here are the picks the Jets have left in the draft:

Round 2, No. 39

Round 3, No. 72

Round 4, No. 106

Round 5, No. 141

Round 6, No. 178

Round 7, No. 215

I believe the Jaguars would be willing to swap second rounders for an additional third round pick as well. This would give them picks 39, 64, and 72 in rounds two and three. The Jaguars are looking to land a number of starters in the NFL Draft and they would increase their chances with two third rounders and could probably still land a first round talent at number 39 in the second round.

Personally, I would love it if the Jaguars traded back a few picks. I haven’t heard anything yet about the Cardinals thinking of trading up but they would be an even better trade partner than the Jets. The Jets would land a quality quarterback if they traded with the Jaguars though it would seem they are creating a glut at the position with David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy, and then either Geno Smith or some other coveted quarterback. I like Garrard and McElroy and I think Tebow (now with fixed mechanics!) and Sanchez would be the odd men out if someone like Smith came to town. Five quarterbacks is a lot in the offseason, especially if the idea is to create an open competition.

The Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers (34), and Philadelphia Eagles (35) are reportedly all looking at trade down possibilities.

Ok, let’s be honest it probably won’t solve the guard problem immediately, but Brandon Moore would be a massive upgrade for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Nobody at left guard looks to be competent for the Jags in 2013, so to free agency we turn!…yet GM Dave Caldwell doesn’t want to spend big. Moore may be too good to pass up, though.

I like turning to the draft as much as the next guy, but if the Jags want to give their quarterbacks and running backs a fighting chance, they need an upgrade at guard. The 2013 offseason should yield that upgrade and Moore can be that guy. While his age, 32, may be a deterrent, Moore hasn’t missed a game since 2004. He is dependable, he is widely regarded as a top player at his position, and has not slowed down despite his age – he made the Pro Bowl for the 2011 season.

Entering free agency for the first time in a while, Moore may be happy to jump ship while he can from the disastrous New York Jets locker room. He may be too loyal to his team to move away, but if the Jags play it right, they could land a top guard.

Pro Football Focus has Moore listed as their top unrestricted free agent guard, but he is more than just a well graded guard. Pairing Moore with Eugene Monroe, Brad Meester/John Estes/Mike Brewster at center, and Uche Nwaneri at the other guard position would greatly improve the unity of an offensive line that has seen too many faces in recent years. If I’m O-line coach George Yarno, I would be insisting on someone like Moore, if only to improve cohesion.

Last year I advocated for a big free agent signing at guard, but the team obviously was not reading B&T. Hopefully they realize that they need someone solid in their now, not later. Draft a right tackle this year, spend at guard. The team needs it.

Other quality guards set to hit free agency:

Andy Levitre, Buffalo Bills

Donald Thomas, New England Patriots

Louis Vasquez, San Diego Chargers
