With the firing of Mike Mularkey, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be looking to get a new head coach soon. They join the Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Arizona Cardinals in the offseason coaching search. The Jags will be looking for their fourth head coach, counting interim coach Mel Tucker, in three seasons. Turmoil is hardly ever a strategy for success, but Jaguars’ new GM Dave Caldwell wants a seamless transition and clean slate to explore all possible avenues. So, what are these avenues?

Schottenheimer isn’t the most popular candidate – at least not if you take a gander at Jags fans on Twitter. Source: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

According to Adam Schefter, both St. Louis Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer and San Francisco 49ers OC Greg Roman are expected candidates for the Jaguars. Roman has been linked to Caldwell through his interviewing process and it is expected that the Jaguars will entertain the idea of bringing him in. Another possible candidate may be Cincinnati Bengals OC Jay Gruden, at least if last year’s coaching search is any indication. Gruden has been a darling of many franchises looking to get a young up and coming offensive minded coach in the top spot, but he has yet to leave Cincy for any of them.

It will be curious to see who the Jaguars pursue and whether Caldwell, himself only 38, is looking to go young or is looking for someone to with previous head coaching experience. The feeling around the twitterverse at least is is that he’ll want to go young and look for a head coach who can bring a fresh take to the Jaguars.

Meanwhile, some people are wondering if the head coaching vacancy is even a desirable job for someone to go to. We may know more about the intentions of Caldwell after the press conference today, but there is no guaranteeing that the Jaguars show their cards so early in the process. For us Jags fans it seems like the position would be desirable for someone who wants to build a team in his own image. For those actually shopping for an NFL team to coach, it may seem like a position with rapid turnover and limited immediate development. But hey, if it doesn’t work out you could end up getting paid for two years to do nothing like Mularkey will be.

The Jacksonville Jaguars posted their worst franchise outing ever during the 2012 season with a 2-12 record. Mike Mularkey, the Jaguars head coach for that season, lost his job on Thursday because of it. As Jags fans we all know about how terrible the Jaguars were this season, but how bad was the team compared to other Jaguar seasons? Here are some of the highlights (lowlights?) of the Jaguars’ 2012 campaign as compared to other seasons.

Worst Record 2-14 (Tied 31st in league)

Worst Offensive Yards (29th in league)

Worst Offensive Points (30th in league)

Worst Defensive Points (29th in league)

Worst Defensive Yards (30th in league)

Worst Point Differential (-185, 31st in league)

Worst Yardage Differential (32nd in league)

That’s an awful lot of worsts, even for a first-year head coach who is struggling with injuries and a talentless roster. The 2012 season was kind of a perfect storm for Mularkey. All he could really do was weather it and hope for the best. Unfortunately, the Jaguars need much more than hope right now. The sad thing is that while these stats are the worst the franchise has ever seen, there is still one or two steps lower the Jags could have gone this season in some of these categories. Fortunately for the Jags there will always be the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders to continue to bog down NFL statistics.

We’ll miss you Mike!…just not statistically, obviously.

Mike Mularkey has been dismissed by the Jacksonville Jaguars the morning of January 10th, less than a year after he joined the team. Mularkey posted a franchise worst 2-14 record in the 2012 season and his job hung in the balance after Jaguars owner Shahid Khan fired general manager Gene Smith. With Smith gone and successor David Caldwell hired, Jaguar Nation was waiting for the other shoe to drop. It did this morning. Mularkey will not be returning.

Mularkey had two years left on his contract before his dismissal.

Caldwell and Mularkey worked together for the Atlanta Falcons during their rebuilding the past four seasons. Mularkey was the offensive coordinator and Caldwell was the director of college scouting. In a statement Caldwell said,

I informed Mike today that he will not return as head coach of the Jaguars. I know Mike well and do not want anyone to misinterpret the rationale behind my decision. Mike is an excellent coach and I am sure he will succeed in his next stop in the NFL. However, I must do what I believe is best for the Jacksonville Jaguars and immediately explore every avenue possible to turn our football team around. For that to happen as seamlessly as we want, and as quickly as our fans deserve, I feel it is in everyone’s best interests for an immediate and clean restart.

A clean restart is exactly what happened when the Atlanta Falcons hired Mike Smith from Jacksonville to be their new head coach. It worked well in Atlanta and Caldwell may be trying to emulate some success that he had there. It is common practice for GMs to want to bring in their own man to head the team when they take over. For Caldwell it has long been speculated that he would target San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Khan expressed his appreciation and support for Mularkey as well,

Mike Mularkey is leaving our organization with my utmost respect. Mike gave the Jaguars everything he had on and off the field, and his efforts as our head coach will always be appreciated. Mike will land on his feet soon. Until then, I wish nothing but the best for Mike and his family.

For a young owner and a new general manager, the entire Jaguars organization just became a clean slate on which they can build a new, solid foundation.
