Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Matt Scott, and Jordan Rodgers all have an “equal” chance of showing why they should be the starter. Gabbert and Henne figure to be the favorites, but there is always that possibility that Scott or Rodgers outplay the two veterans and find themselves taking snaps.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

There is nothing more exciting in the offseason than an unsettled quarterback position. You can root for a player to make a jump up and start, you can root for a player to suddenly fulfill his potential (looking at you, Gabbert), or you can root for the team to just tank and “suck for ____.” No matter what, an unsettled quarterback position brings in attention.

While we’re all eager to see how it turns out, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. Gabbert and Henne are likely the front runners through the offseason. They are defending their status as #1 and #2 of the team throughout the offseason, but it is unlikely that Rodgers or Scott can unseat them. Would we all be pleased to see it? More than likely. Will it happen? Don’t hold your breath.

Senior Jaguars.com writer may have the best advice about the entire thing saying, “OTAs are part of the process, and we should have an idea of where each player stands – and their comfort level in Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch’s scheme…” He advises waiting until mid June to see who is going to get the nod. I say it may take longer than that. Hopefully we aren’t having surprise QB cuts the day before the season starts, but it may still be an unsettled position for a longer period than even mid June.

Bring on the quarterback competition! It’s always exciting, but let’s be patient as we watch it all unravel.

The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback competition began with a veteran minicamp before the NFL Draft. Jaguars quarterbacks Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert are the presumptive leaders in what really became a four-man competition with the additions of undrafted free agents Jordan Rodgers of Vanderbilt and Matt Scott of Arizona. With this weekend rookie minicamp Rodgers and Scott began their own QB competition as they fight for a roster spot.

While there was a third first year player at practice on Friday, Kawaun Jakes of Western Kentucky seems to be more of an afterthought when talking about the competition for the Jaguars are the game’s most important position.

Scott and Jordan had tough conditions to throw in with the rain and some strong gusts of wind which made it hard for them to impress. Scott, who looked to be a late-round draft pick but slid out of the draft entirely, impressed head coach Gus Bradley during practice, according to senior Jaguars.com writer John Oehser. ”It looked like he had a good skill set,” said Bradley. He added that he was excited to see how he progresses.

If the reports from day one are that Scott appears to have been better, then Rodgers will have to up his game in order to remain in the conversation for a potential third quarterback spot in 2013. There are no guarantees that the team carries three QBs, but if they do it will be because either Scott or Rodgers really impressed.

Scott was intercepted by second-round pick Johnathan Cyprien during practice as well.

The QB competition will be heating up all offseason. We’ll see if either rookie quarterback can push Henne and Gabbert to just get better.
