It’s no secret the Jaguars could use some help at quarterback. The team has openly stated they are looking for someone in the draft or free agency to bring in and compete with Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert. While the free agent market is slim, there are some potential players that could push Gabbert and Henne, especially considering the mediocre numbers the Jags’ two quarterbacks posted in 2012. Here are three quarterbacks the Jag should look at as NFL Free Agency begins at 4:00 pm EST on Tuesday.

Chase Daniel

2012 Team: New Orleans Saints

Why: Daniel has sat behind NFL Great Drew Brees for a while now and is likely learning innovative skills behind him and in head coach Sean Payton’s diverse system. Daniel is young at just age 26 and has good physical tools. He is unproven, but the Jags’ current quarterbacks are as well so throwing one more into the mix and taking the best of the crop from the open competition won’t make much of a difference. Fresh blood should help.

Matt Leinart

2012 Team: Oakland Raiders

Why: A former first round pick who never developed had a real shot in 2011 with the Houston Texans but wound up injured. Gary Kubiak, the Texans’ head coach, was high on Leinart and is generally regarded as a good quarterback evaluator. I like Leinart’s physical abilities and he seems to have grown out of his diva-esque persona that he had when he was young in his career with the Arizona Cardinals. At age 30 and with six seasons behind him, he could potentially beat out Chad Henne as the veteran quarterback presence on the roster.

Drew Stanton

2012 Team: Indianapolis Colts

Why: Stanton has a lot of upside. The Jaguars are reportedly a potential landing spot already, so it could be a good match from the front office’s viewpoint as well. Stanton, 28, spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions before heading to the Colts in 2012. An ex-second round pick, he has the tools and possibly the drive to beat out either Gabbert or Henne.

But what if someone was? Source: Brendan Maloney-US PRESSWIRE

In all seriousness, I don’t think this will happen. Actually, I don’t think it should happen. It isn’t beneficial to the Jaguars organization in any way, especially after nabbing Gabbert at 10 last year. The mere suggestion of the Jags picking a quarterback in this year’s NFL draft is ludicrous!

Or is it?

Around the interwebs as of late, there has been much (uninformed) discussion about who the Jaguars will take with the 7th pick. I’m not talking about the people who create mock drafts and feel the pressure of the web community bearing down on them so they predict the Jags scooping up Quinton Coples or some other “safe” pick.

I’m talking about the guys who sit on comment sections of articles or sit on NFL draft forums saying things like, “Blaine Gabbert was never very good during the season, might as well call a mulligan early.” You know the guy. He’s usually wearing a Cam Newton jersey at the bar of your local Buffalo Wild Wings.

But what if the Jaguars did do that? What if the Jags took their seventh pick and decided that pulling the trigger on a quarterback seemed logical? I’m not ruling out Gene Smith trading up to get a player he wants (we’ve all seen him do so in the past), what if that player is a quarterback? (more…)
