Without ex-head coachMike Mularkey, the Jacksonville Jaguars are beginning to experience an exodus among the assistants. Owner Shad Khan gave the assistants permission to interview for other jobs about two weeks ago, but nobody jumped ship until this week. Mularkey was fired last Thursday and since then the assistants have begun their own job searches for preservation.

Here is the news on where some guys may end up:

Bobby Johnson

The Jaguars’ tight ends coach is going to the Detroit Lions for next year. Johnson will be filling the same role in Detroit as he has for the Jaguars. He has been with the Jaguars since 2012 and came to Jacksonville as part of Mularkey’s staff.

Greg Olson

Olson is one of the better known assistants for the Jaguars. As the quarterbacks coach he was expected to help turn Blaine Gabbert into an actual NFL quarterback. While Gabbert is still a work in progress, the development he showed in the season was not the leaps and bounds anticipated for 2012. Olson is smart to begin interviewing for another job since his time in Jacksonville did not garner results that the team needed. Olson has just interviewed for the Oakland Raiders’ offensive coordinator position.

Joe Cullen

Cullen and his “rushmen” will probably be run out of town by new general manager Dave Caldwell and the new head coach simply because his work has not yielded results. Well liked by the Jaguars players as well as fans for his demeanor and approach to getting the job done, Cullen simply has not had the amount of success this team needs. The Jaguars, yet again, were ranked lowest in total sacks. Yet this isn’t stopping the Browns from seeking permission to interview him.

The NFL is a rough business that requires instant gratification from its coaches. Teams generally don’t have years to wait around until the tight end coach cultivates one season of success. The Jaguars, looking for something fresh, will likely scrap a lot of the coaching staff anyway so it is smart of these coaches to get out early and on top.

The preseason is here and the Fantasy Football season is on the horizon. Whether it be an 8 or 14 man league; a Standard, Auction or any other variant; fantasy players are gearing up around the world. Now while most NFL fans really only follow their favorite team, trusting information from other sources is important to build your team in the draft as well as post-op in the waiver wire. While your mock drafts and top player cheat sheets are under way, remember to do your homework.

The Jaguars only have one player that is worth a first round pick, although he is falling in value considering he is not with the team or NWT. Maurice Jones-Drew is falling fast and is providing some leagues with a great second round pick. Media outlets are informing fans that MJD will be in for a lengthy holdout which is notable, yet these are the same media outlets that believe the Jaguars will move to LA. even though they have a lengthy stadium deal in play. The further time moves along, the worse the situation becomes as a new playbook and not being with the team will add more rust to the tires. Expect MJD to still be drafted in the first few rounds, he is too good to pass up, even if he misses a few games.

The greatest news for Jaguars fantasy players is the amount of knowledge we have of our roster. While it may only take a few clicks to check who our current starter is, many won’t considering how abysmal the offense would have been without him last year. Yet Rashad Jennings has show to hold his own when spelling Jones-Drew is years past, acquiring a healthy 5.4 average on 123 carries in two years. He missed last season, his third, with a knee sprain, which was not serious, but placed him on I.R. Jennings will see the field this Friday night against the Giants, which depending on his performance may raise his value significantly. If you are drafting before Friday nights game, draft him in the final rounds as a good handcuff/sleeper, you won’t regret it.

July 27, 2012; Jacksonville FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Laurent Robinson (81) runs during the first afternoon of training camp practice at Florida Blue Health

The Jaguars have invested greatly in the offense this season, so don’t be afraid to take either Justin Blackmon or Laurent Robinson in the mid to late rounds, depending on how deep your league is. Mike Thomas has now been downgraded to the slot and is returning punts with Cecil Shorts, but unless they greatly impress during the next four games, don’t worry about either as well as Lee Evans as there as better value out there. The Jags have invested time money and high draft picks to make the passing game work. They also invested in head coach/ offense coordinators Mike Mularkey and Bob Bratkowski, as well as being able to snag retired wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, to coach up these offensive weapons. They will be given every chance to succeed, especially since MJD is holding out as well as Mularkey having gone on record to saying they want a more balanced offense. Blaine Gabbert however, may go undrafted as well as Marcedes Lewis after having slumps last season. Bratkowski has also said recently that the passing attack, “Hasn’t been very good”, but with Justin Blackmon arriving to camp, that should soon change. They are going up against last years six rated defense after all. Gabbert is worth being a back up in deep leagues and well as everyone else being a number 2 or 3 on your team.

The Jaguars have a kicker worth drafting or picking up in the waivers in Josh Scobee. Scobee has become one of the better kickers in the league, hitting a clutch 59 yard field goal two years ago to beat the Colts as well as helping a few fantasy games. He is coming off making 92% of his kicks being 23/25, missing one between 40-49 yards, and one over 50+ yards. Consider Scobee a reliable kicker to be taken after Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers.

July 27, 2012; Jacksonville FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars assistant special teams coach Craig Aukerman (left) during the first day of training camp practice at Florida Blue Health

Finally we have the defense, which is on the fringe of becoming elite. While the defense isn’t flashy in forcing turnovers in years past, this may change this coming season due to a variety of factors. Last season, the Defense experienced an overhaul of players including Paul Posluszny, Dawan Landry, Clint Session, and Dwight Lowery. These players now have a year under their belt with the team which has made huge impact from one of the worst, to one of the best defenses in the league. Session is currently hurt but has a good replacement in Russell Allen to take his place. The Jaguars also spent their second draft pick on defensive end Andre Branch out of Clemson. Branch has been noted for his ability to bend around the edge which will contribute to recording more sacks. Under defensive line coach Joe Cullen, the Jaguars have increased their sack totals every season since his arrival in Jacksonville. This defense is also under the radar, so expect the defense to go undrafted in most leagues, but look for a great sleeper as the season goes on.

Good luck to everyone in their drafts, and thank god the Jaguars are back this Friday.

In 2009 the Jaguars began their rebuilding phase, and drafted players like Defensive Tackle Terrance Knighton and Defensive End Austen Lane to once again have a formidable front. Once again in 2010, the Jags selected defensive tackles in the first and third round with Tyson Alualu and D’Anthony Smith to reenforce the line with the full departure Marcus Stroud, John Henderson, Paul Spicer and Reggie Hayward.

May 6, 2012; Jacksonville FL, USA; The Jacksonville Jaguars defensive unit works out during rookie mini camp at Florida Blue Health

Fast forward to 2011, the Jaguars made bigger moves to the back seven of the defense in Free Agency by scooping up players Paul Posluszny, Dawan Landry and Clint Session to bulk up their defense. They were also able to secure Dwight Lowery and Drew Coleman, whose contributions made the Jaguars the 6th rated defense in the league. Looking forward to the 2012-2013 season, the Jags have acquired more talent to climb the ladder into top 5 contention.

Defensive line coach, and avid screamer Joe Cullen was hired to improve the defense line, and for two seasons, he has. From 26 sacks in 2010 to 31 sacks in 2011, the arrow only points up with the talent in the Jaguars locker room. In this year’s draft, the first defensive player who will help the Jags defense reach elite status was Andre Branch with the 38th pick. With him, the Jaguars are hoping they have finally found their missing piece at defensive end. If his pass rushing talent translates well at the pro level, he will give the Jags what they’ve longed for since the line included the names Reggie Hayward and Paul Spicer. Andre will most definitely start opposite Jeremy Mincey who has been a bright spot at the position. Depth includes Austen Lane and John Chick who have proven to be capable backups, but have yet to reach their potential.

Defensive Tackle is another position that looks improved this season with plenty of competitive depth, something all teams strive for. Terrance Knighton and Tyson Alualu will most likely return as starters, unless the team believes Knighton requires more time to heal from and eye injury suffered this offseason. The depth at this position is incredible with players like C.J. Mosley, and D’Anthony Smith and newly acquired Jeris Pendleton.

July 28 2011; Jacksonville FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars guard Brandon Harper (64) tries to block defensive tackle D

D’Anthony Smith is heading into his third season as a rookie, never officially playing in a regular season game due to injuries suffered in the preseason. I look at Smith like a player drafted in the NHL or MLB. He was drafted, but has not yet played in the majors. The NFL does not have farm teams, but Smith has had the playbook, the weight room and access to coaches as well other assets during his recovery, which makes him a more refined player heading into his first real year.

Last but not least in Jeris Pendleton who was taken in the 7th round as an insurance policy. Pendleton is not your average rookie as he, like Brandon Weeden, is 28 years old. However, unlike Weeden, Pendleton is not being asked to start at the most difficult position on the field which may take years to develop. Pendleton with be in the rotation, and should be able to stop the run well with his size and strength. He may be years older than the average NFL rookie, but he is a grown man with strength to plug up the middle.

While the Jaguars are not ever seen as a real force to be reckoned with, they’re defensive play spoke volumes despite their massive injury reserve list. The Jaguars may have finished 6th overall in defense last season, but with new additions and a demanding coach, they will improve.
