Jim Caldwell was fired by new Colts general manager Ryan Grigson and owner Jim Irsay on Tuesday January 17th.

To be honest, I’m not shocked. This year the Colts went from perennial super bowl contender to the joke of the league faster than anybody could have realized. It was painful to watch them take the field, and not just because of the loss of Peyton Manning (a subject of discussion for another article). The defense was inept, the special teams looked horrendously bland, and the coaches looked about as lost as the players – perhaps they were wondering along with the rest of us how they made it to the NFL level.

Ok, maybe that was harsh.

But the glint of success wasn’t in anybody’s eyes. Nobody was hungry for a win. Sure, Peyton’s offseason neck surgeries put a sour note to the season before it even began, but the team was embarrassingly flat. That is due to poor coaching.

There are numerous different philosophies for coaching, some are players’ coaches, some remain distant from the team, others are brash, and still some rule with a cool dominance that demands respect. None of those philosophies were reflected in Jim Caldwell and his staff. (more…)

When looking at the rosters of the four AFC South teams, there is a good case for the division being one of the NFL’s strongest. There’s a first-ballot future Hall of Fame quarterback, three of the top 10 best running backs in the NFL, there are two of top 5 tight ends in Dallas Clark and Marcedes Lewis, and two All-Pro wide receivers, one of which might be the best in the NFL. There is less talent on the defensive side, but there are still plenty of elite players, especially along the defensive line. Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Mario Williams, and Aaron Kampman are elite-level defensive ends and there are many up-and-coming defensive tackles like Jason Jones and Terrance Knighton. However, there is one position where this division is truly lacking elite talent – head coach.

The Jaguars needed a little bit of help winning the game against the Colts. After all, the Jaguars played as well as they could and still needed a 59 yard miracle field goal and a dropped interception to finish the deal. Thankfully Jim Caldwell was there to help. The problem I am having is I can’t decide how he helped the most. Can you help me think this one out?

The first thing he did was call timeout with a second and two for the Jaguars. You know the Jaguars wanted to run the ball rather than trust David which would have burned time off the clock. Was Jack serious about trying to score? He was after Jim Caldwell called timeout. There was time to go for it. Jack saw an opening that I am not sure he saw before. Maybe that was a gift, I don’t know.

The second thing our friend Jim did was try to ice Scobee. The Jaguars ran out and set up for the field goal. I was sitting watching thinking, this looks like the typical Jaguars, a little hurried, a little uncoordinated. I didn’t think the rush was going to get the job done, then Jim Caldwell called timeout. The Jaguars settled in, Scobee lined up his kick and I felt more sure of the second try than the first. I thought the timeout was a real gift allowing the Jaguars to get comfortable.

So which one was the biggest blessing for the Jaguars? Help me out.

- Terry O’Brien
