Last month, we started our Jaguars Approval Polls here on B&T. While the offseason doesn’t present a lot of change from week to week (or even month to month for that matter), gathering the voice and opinions of the fans and gauging it as the team develops is key to understanding what and why the front office of the Jacksonville Jaguars does things.

During last month’s polling, most of the head men in Jacksonville received overwhelming support from the community:

100% of fans approved of new head coach Mike Mularkey

98% of fans approved of new offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski

100% of fans approved of defensive coordinator Mel Tucker

78% of fans approved of general manager Gene Smith

With the cutting of Jarett Dillard and Aaron Kampman and the addition of even more strong, competitive players, it will be curious to see how you, the fans, respond. What about Justin Blackmon’s arrest? How does that affect the opinion on the team?

Without further ado, let’s get to the polling!

It’s roster analysis season for the NFL. Teams are evaluating rookies and veterans on a mini-camp and workout basis. Players work for roster spots, hoping to impress coaches. Fans and writers expound about hidden gems and talented prospects. But we don’t really know who is going to be around until the end of the preseason.

Here at B&T, Daniel Lago and David Johns have been writing about the Jaguars’ Post-Draft Roster and projecting who will be in the final 53 man roster. It’s a tough go of it, slogging through hours of video and sifting through coach speak to find the truth, but things get easier every time the team releases who they’ve cut and who they’ve signed.

The Jags got a jump on and opened their rookie mini-camp this past weekend to evaluate talent. The camp ended Sunday and yielded some interesting changes:

Cuts:

QB Dan LeFevour (3rd string)

WR Jarett Dillard

S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (special teams)

WR Nelson Rosario

WR Jarrett Boykin

DE Frank Trotter

Signings

QB Jordan Palmer

FB Naufahu Tahi

DT Odrick Ray

WR Mike Brown

WR Chris Forcier

LB Donovan Richard

DB Jeremiah Brown

Of the Players cut, the biggest name is Jarett Dillard who was always kind of been a sacred cow for Gene Smith. A talented player who was often injured and could never truly translate his skills to the game. Dan LeFevour’s cutting isn’t much of a surprise following the recent touting of newly signed Jordan Palmer.

Of the signings, there is one really intriguing one: Naufahu Tahi is now the third fullback on the roster behind Brock Bolen and Greg Jones. Tahi played for the Vikings sporadically over the past five seasons. I doubt the Jags will carry three fullbacks into the season, but if Tahi is worthy of a signing it could be an indication of what the front office and coaching staff thinks of current fullbacks Jones and Bolen. Money may be becoming an issue with Jones’ contract despite his superb play.

The roster will continue to be tweaked over the next few months. If the results continue to add intrigue like this then the offseason could be more enjoyable than usual! Expect more changes with the new coaching staff finally getting to work hands-on with the players.

Dillard was a coaching favorite and a talented player according to most everyone. The problem was that he couldn’t stay on the field due to injury.

Maybe Dillard can translate his talent into plays for another team...he has the skills to do it if he can learn to apply it in game. Source: Jim Brown-US PRESSWIRE

Since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 draft, Dillard has seen the field in all of 21 games with five starts – all coming in 2011. He was inactive during the 2010 season. I have openly voiced my criticism of the Jags keeping the wide receiver on the roster (among other oft-injured players).

The production of Dillard when he did see the field did not warrant his retention. In 14 games last season he only hauled in 29 passes for 292 yards (a 10.1 yard per reception average) and one touchdown. His 20.9 yards per game were not part of the solution to the Jags’ anemic passing attack.

One of the reasons Mike Thomas was extended last year was because he had shown he can make plays. Laurent Robinson was brought in because he has shown the ability to be a play maker. Justin Blackmon has the talent to be a continuous highlight reel. Lee Evans has enough highlight reels to watch for a lifetime.

All of these players are here and will be retained because they can make plays.

Dillard displayed some flashes of talent, but didn’t show that he could be a difference maker.

It’s apparent that the Jags need someone who can securely grab the ball and then do something special with it in his hands. Not only was the continuous injuries a problem for Dillard, but his talent didn’t translate into anything special on the field.

A lot of people, especially people on this site, wanted to see Dillard succeed. Unfortunately it isn’t going to happen here in Jacksonville.
