Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Jags need some secondary help, and with the combine approaching there will be some good players rocketing up draft boards. Will one of them be the next Darrelle Revis? Possibly. With the Jags likely spending their first round pick on a defensive linemen, let’s turn our attention to some later first round, second round, and third round prospects that could really make themselves prime targets for the Jags at cornerback.

Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington

Can Trufant do enough at the combine to be picked ahead of someone like Xavier Rhodes? I don’t think he can, but that may be a good thing for the Jags. Keep an eye on Trufant and see if he can make someone like Aaron Ross expendable to the Jags. He may come off more impressive at the combine than his tackling has shown on the game tape.

Robert Alford, CB, Southeast Louisiana

I know that GM Dave Caldwell just said he’ll be aiming for bigger school prospects, but Alford’s the real deal. He dominated at Southeast Louisiana and could easily slide on draft day largely due to his relative anonymity. Don’t expect eye-popping numbers from Alford at the combine, but look to see if he stays with his competition. His game-speed is likely faster than his workout. I’m high on Alford and would love to see him sitting around for the Jags in the second or third – if he gets that far.

Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State

A physical corner, Taylor could be a secondary enforcer for the Jags. Of course, we all saw how well that worked out with Gene Smith’s pick of Rod Issac. Taylor could impress with his athleticism at the combine but he needs work in his recovery speed and needs to become more fluid in his movements on the whole. Watch to see if he shows off some less-developed skills at the combine and proves that hard work can change his game.
