Jedd Fisch, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive coordinator, is in the process of installing the third different offense for the Jags in three years. Fisch is coming up from The University of Miami (Florida) where he had a high tempo offense centered around letting the quarterback wing it and a strong complementary running game. He is beginning to install his offense with the Jaguars now, during a voluntary mini-camp.

Fisch’s offense will hopefully inspire some better quarterback play and stretch the field to take some pressure off star running back Maurice Jones-Drew. While the players aren’t expected to have it all down now, April is about seeing if the players can transfer what they learned in the meeting room onto the field. “We can do everything we want to get done right now. It’s only April. We’re teaching everything. We’re evaluating them on what they can process, on how they can take the meeting room onto the field,” Fisch said. So far it looks like things are going alright by all accounts.

Quarterback Chad Henne confirmed that the offense will incorporate some of the “sugar huddle” that was incredibly popular in Indianapolis with Peyton Manning. ”We want to keep the defense off balance at all times,” said Henne when talking about Fisch’s offense.

Anything that is fast and keeps defense’s from no longer keying onto what the Jaguars are doing is a good thing in my book. For too long the Jags have been a predictable run first, plodding team rather than an attacking offense. I like what I hear out of Fisch and the offensive players after the first couple of days, especially now that the overall scheme is starting to come together.

The Jaguars will rely heavily on having everyone on the same page for the 2012 season. Learning a new offense is difficult, as is adjusting to a new coaching staff, but it looks like new head coach Mike Mularkey knows how to get everyone seeing the same things.

Look at that uniform stretching! Source: US-Presswire

Mularkey has made a point of getting the players to ask questions, understand what needs to be done, and learning how to do things right. It isn’t just about making sure that the players are ready to compete, it’s also about making sure that the team is as disciplined as it can be heading into the season. Being disciplined is a lifestyle more than it is a directive. Discipline is a learned trait that influences everything you do. Disciple in the reason you get up to run a mile or two in the morning no matter how you feel, but it is also a conformity to a scheme or ideology.

In Jacksonville, that scheme is the Mularkey scheme.

Mularkey expects everyone to be in sync. While he says that the offense being installed is user-friendly, he knows that players can’t pick it up on day one, nor can they pick it up effectively unless they pick it together. Mularkey’s focus is so great that he expects uniform stretching and play performance,

We want to look like a team that would like to win a championship, and the way you do that is you do things right,” he said. “Whether it’s stretching, lining up your helmets right or doing jumping jacks together as a team, I tell them, ‘There are 11 guys in that row. Why have one helmet out of whack? You can’t have one out of sync any time when you have 11 guys together, so let’s just do it.

That discipline is something that has lacked in recent years. The Jack Del Rio tended to focus more on trying to draw in some attention on the small market franchise during the offseason. A way to do that is to have fun drills that showcase individual skills. Mularkey’s approach is to get everyone doing the same things os that pieces and players are interchangeable and can perform all the tasks of the offensive scheme being installed. That type of reliable interchangeability is something gained from being in sync and learning how to be a disciplined unit.

It looks like Mularkey is the guy to lead and enforce that discipline and get the team on the right page.

The Jacksonville Jaguars three day mini-camp wrapped up today, ending on a high note. Head coach Mike Mularkey was excited to get the things that needed to be done, done.

The most impressive thing about the ini-camp, and the offseason thus far, has been the effort the Jaguars players have been putting in. Oftentimes you hear a writer, a coach, or a general manager talking about teams being hungry. Those are the teams that really want to succeed. But rarely do you hear about the actual effort that a team makes. It is great to be hungry for a championship but, until you actually buckle down and work that hunger will never be satisfied.

Here it is a good thing that Mularkey has had past head coaching experience. He knows what it is like to have a hungry team and to have a team that is less motivated and puts less effort in. Here at Jacksonville he knows that “We got really great effort.” It isn’t exactly a comparison to his time in Buffalo, but it certainly is good to know that someone who has been around the block recognizes the effort that the Jaguars have been putting in.

Effort is easily overlooked, but with the Jags it has become a focus. General Manager Gene Smith has tried to place an emphasis on “high motor” guys. He drafts players that have a proven history of not giving up on plays and being competitive. Those types of players are the ones the Jaguars want and need.

According to Mike Mularkey, it seems like the Jags have got them.
