Position coaches don’t get the big hullabaloo that coordinators and head coaches do, yet they can be some of the most influential people in shaping an athlete. Some of them, like the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Greg Olson, make the jump up to coordinators. Some of them never get much further than their specific position group. Yet everyone starts somewhere. If you’re like Jerry Sullivan you may spend almost your entire career as a position coach and make a name for yourself as a very good specialist.

Sullivan (wide receivers) and linebackers coach Mark Duffner were retained by the Jaguars earlier this week. Now, with other coaches leaving the Jags, they have added three others.

DeWayne Walker has been hired to replace Tony Oden as the secondary coach for the Jags. Walker has most recently served as the head coach at New Mexico State where he struggled to put together a winning program. Walker has been the defensive coordinator for UCLA before that and the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins, New York Giants, and New England Patriots among other college programs.

Can Scelfo get more productivity out of Blaine Gabbert then Greg Olson did? Source: US-Presswire

To replace Olson (Oakland’s new OC) the Jaguars have brought in Frank Scelfo. Scelfo was a high school quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for years before moving up to join the staff at Tulane. There he moved from tight ends to the quarterback coach position and offensive coordinator. Most recently he coached the University of Arizona Wildcats at the quarterback position. He brings years and years of experience at a lower level to the Jaguars, but is unproven in the big leagues.

New offensive line coach George Yarno has been brought in to replace Andy Heck (Kansas City Chiefs). Yarno was an NFL guard for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, and the Houston Oilers before turning to coaching. He has been doing offensive line work since 1991 and has worked with the Bucs and Detroit Lions in the NFL at offensive line. He is coming over to the Jaguars after being with the Lions since 2009.

As the staff continues to be filled out, we’ll be sure to keep reporting about which coaches will be coming to the Jags. So far it looks like a mix of proven and less proven guys, but that doesn’t mean that the talent is not necessarily there for those who are joining the Jags’ ranks.

Three Jaguar assistant coaches have landed new jobs. In each case, I can argue they have moved up in the NFL coaching ladder.

Andy Heck was selected by Andy Ried to coach the offensive line in Kansas City. Andy was our O-Line coach but if Andy Ried turns the Chiefs around, Andy Heck will be noticed. Normally moving from the Jaguars to the Chiefs is not considered moving up, but coaching for Andy Ried right now looks up to me.

Mel Tucker is the new Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator. Chicago is a much more visible position than the Jaguars position and so Mel Tucker landed in a better upward position than he had here. Mel Tucker can leverage that into a HC possibility with a strong Bears defensive showing.

Greg Olson went from our QB coach to the Oakland Raiders Offensive Coordinator. Olson has more NFL experience than Gus Bradley. With a strong performance in Oakland, Greg can leverage his experience and successes into a HC position.

Somehow I don’t believe coaching was the Jaguars’ problem. I think Jack Del Rio and Mike Mularkey could have delivered playoff teams if they had something to work with. The biggest change the Jaguars needed was in the GM position and now we wait and see.

Without ex-head coachMike Mularkey, the Jacksonville Jaguars are beginning to experience an exodus among the assistants. Owner Shad Khan gave the assistants permission to interview for other jobs about two weeks ago, but nobody jumped ship until this week. Mularkey was fired last Thursday and since then the assistants have begun their own job searches for preservation.

Here is the news on where some guys may end up:

Bobby Johnson

The Jaguars’ tight ends coach is going to the Detroit Lions for next year. Johnson will be filling the same role in Detroit as he has for the Jaguars. He has been with the Jaguars since 2012 and came to Jacksonville as part of Mularkey’s staff.

Greg Olson

Olson is one of the better known assistants for the Jaguars. As the quarterbacks coach he was expected to help turn Blaine Gabbert into an actual NFL quarterback. While Gabbert is still a work in progress, the development he showed in the season was not the leaps and bounds anticipated for 2012. Olson is smart to begin interviewing for another job since his time in Jacksonville did not garner results that the team needed. Olson has just interviewed for the Oakland Raiders’ offensive coordinator position.

Joe Cullen

Cullen and his “rushmen” will probably be run out of town by new general manager Dave Caldwell and the new head coach simply because his work has not yielded results. Well liked by the Jaguars players as well as fans for his demeanor and approach to getting the job done, Cullen simply has not had the amount of success this team needs. The Jaguars, yet again, were ranked lowest in total sacks. Yet this isn’t stopping the Browns from seeking permission to interview him.

The NFL is a rough business that requires instant gratification from its coaches. Teams generally don’t have years to wait around until the tight end coach cultivates one season of success. The Jaguars, looking for something fresh, will likely scrap a lot of the coaching staff anyway so it is smart of these coaches to get out early and on top.
