This week the Jaguars host the Jets in what should be a close, hard fought game. While the national media might tend to view the Jaguars as a team that just can’t get it to work, the Jets are no better as they are slowly falling out of the hunt with their own controversies and poor performances.

The Jaguars have had trouble putting points on the board this year, as it’s been tradition to for the past few years. The concern has always been to get a solid player at the wide receiver position since Jimmy Smith retired. While some play has come from the likes of Matt Jones, Torry Holt, Mike Sims-Walker and Mike Thomas; all were either patches and or expendable. With drafted receivers Cecil Shorts III and Justin Blackmon, the problem seems to be solved but other major concerns shine brighter with the quarterback position. Chad Henne can win games and has shown bigger play than Blaine Gabbert, but who’s to say either are the answer? Gabbert was drafted to be the future of the franchise, yet in two years hasn’t be able to win the amount of games he was thought to win even through improvement. Gabbert is conservative who checks down too often, only throwing a deep ball when in the last seconds of a game. Henne on the other hand has everything to lose as he was the back up going into this season after his departure from Miami. When your job is on the line you have to let it fly.

The Jets have a similar problem but with three names, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy. The fans and media of New York are a fickle breed. Winning is important and appealing to anyone, especially to such a highly populated city. Mark Sanchez, the incumbent starter, remains the starter this week even after getting benched in place of McElroy last week. Fans love anything “not Sanchez” right now. Had Tebow been in for Sanchez, the story would have been bigger but not as controversial as now three quarterbacks could start any given week.

The locker room will be divided as every player should favor one guy over another, as they all bring something to the table that gives the team a chance to win. However, quarterback is a position seldom played by more than one player for each team pending injury. The Tebow experiment is all but a bust, and after last week McElroy is the fan favorite. Tim Tebow has the been the best passer on the team statistics wise, save one hesitated McElroy touchdown.

With the Jets failing who will make the team a winner, if anyone?
The Jets locker room is definitely a tense place to be right now even if Sanchez has been given the green light for this week. With the team divided and distracted, the psychological edge will hands down go to opposing teams which will impact not only the offense but the entire team as well. Going forward no one knows who exactly will be the quarterback, the incumbent starter, the fan favorite, or the next best thing, but McElory said it best last January as the Jets Locker room can’t be a fun place right now.

Editor’s Note: Being a part of the Fansided Network, we have the opportunity to interact with the other NFL sites that can give us insight into their teams. Before each game we will be providing you with a quick questionnaire that the opposition’s site editor has provided us.

This week we have the opportunity to talk to The Jet Press editor Alan Schechter who took the time to answer five questions for us here at B&T.

Let’s get a little taste of the New York Jets before Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

1) How do Jets fans feel about Mark Sanchez getting the start over McElroy or Tebow?

Nobody really thought that Tebow was going to get the start. They haven’t used him at all so far, in any real role other than the personal punt protector, there was no reason to believe they were going to start now. As far as the other two, fans are not happy about going back to Mark Sanchez. Some want McElroy because he is “not Sanchez”, while others want to see him to see what we have. They are all but out of the playoff race, and we know what we have in Mark Sanchez. But, the way the Jets operate, nobody is really shocked by the decision, just disappointed.

2) The rushing offense for the Jets has been a good indicator of success for the team, how do you think Shonn Greene will do against the Jags D?

The Jets have been getting the running game on the right track of late, even in losses, and I think that will continue here. Being ranked 31st in the NFL against the run as the Jags are may be just what the doctor ordered. You aren’t going to just see Shonn Greene, the Jets have been showing a lot of Bilal Powell, as well as a sprinkling of Joe McKnight. I think the running game will perform well on Sunday.

3) 5-7 is definitely not where the Jets want to be, what has been going wrong this season?

Well, it starts with injuries. Losing Santonio Holmes on offense has been backbreaking to the team. Losing Revis didn’t exactly hurt, but the defense has rebounded pretty well. The Jets haven’t had their number one weapons available, and the quarterback play has been downright awful at times. Mark Sanchez has been inconsistent, partially because he has been undermined with the lack of weapons and with Tim Tebow on the team, partially from simply making bad decisions. Bad quarterback play spreads like a virus through the entire offense. The defense has been good, but the offense simply hasn’t out up enough points.

4) How warm is Rex Ryan’s seat? Are fans and decision makers starting to grow weary of Ryan?

I would say that Rex’s seat is warm at best. I truthfully don’t see him losing his job this year, I belive the Jets will bring him back one more time. He will be able to put a lot of the blame on Mike Tannenbaum, who most of us believe will lose his job first.

5) How do you think this matchup will play out on Sunday?

I think the Jets will take this one fairly easily. It won’t be an explosion of points, something like a 17-10 affair.

We’ll see if the Jets handle the Jags fairly easily. A big thank you to Alan and The Jet Press for the conversation!

Greg McElroy will be an intriguing study for me. Here’s what I know: The guy lost less than 10 games in his college career on arguably a top-5 per year talent team. McElroy never had to win the game as Alabama had a steady running game and in 2009 that was led by Mark Ingrams’ Heisman winning campaign Alabama would go on to win the National Championship that season.

McElroy has plenty of arm strength and enough smarts to graduate early and be a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

Why is he viewed only as a backup?
