Jack Del Rio was told to “hit the road” by Jaguars’ owner Wayne Weaver this morning after dropping his eighth loss of the season in an uninspired performance against the division rival Houston Texans in front of the Jacksonville home crowd this Sunday. You have to give Weaver credit for not making a rash decision after the disappointing past few season, when there was far more to blame than just the Head Coach. Maybe he should have been fired sooner, but there were other problems that had to be addressed first including the removal of Shack Harris and a massive overhaul of the roster, which GM Gene Smith has worked tirelessly on for the past three years. The Jaguars have unabashedly rid themselves of the problems that couldn’t be fixed since the great shakeup of 2008 – just ask Jerry Porter, Drayton Florence, Derrick Harvey, Quentin Groves, Mike Peterson, Justin Durant, Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, David Garrard, and Fred Taylor (who, despite being beloved in Jacksonville, had used all the tread on his tires). After 11 games this season, it was clear that Jack Del Rio was a problem that couldn’t be fixed and it is now time to move on without looking back. In the meantime, he will be replaced at HC by defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who took playcalling and additional responsibilities from Jack Del Rio last offseason and helped the Jaguars evolve from the #28 overall and #28 passing defense last year to the #4 overall and #4 passing defense in 2011.
