Quarterback Blaine Gabbert is making progress, and that is a good thing. Earlier today, we talked about what may happen if Gabbert doesn’t up his game. And we all hope that doesn’t happen.

So far, it’s appearing as though any hypothetical situations involving new quarterbacks for the Jacksonville Jaguars are just that: hypothetical.

Head Coach Mike Mularkey likes the progress he has been seeing in Gabbert. According to information from ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky, Gabbert is learning proper footwork and how to stand tall in the pocket. Offensive Coordinatory Bob Bratkowski’s impact is already being felt by Gabbert and the other quarterbacks.

Bob Bratkowski helped with Matt Ryan last year. Can he make Gabbert stay cool like Matty Ice? Source: Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Bratkowski worked with Atlanta’s Matt Ryan last year as the quarterbacks coach and worked through the early struggles and success of Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer. He is focusing on letting Blaine Gabbert feel comfortable in the pocket, even with the arms and bodies of the defensive and offensive line flying around him. He is teach Gabbert to slow down. It will allow Gabbert to see more of the field, not be so long in his drops, and should develop patience when going through his progressions rather than immediately checking down to his running backs.

With Gabbert standing taller in the pocket, the Jaguars can hope to begin exploiting mismatches that receivers like Justin Blackmon and Marcedes Lewis can create with their size and talent.

It’s important to note that the coaches see Gabbert as a quarterback that can succeed in this league. By all accounts, he is on his way there.

- Luke N. Sims
