The owners voted to make thigh and knee pads mandatory on Tuesday. This is something that the NFL Players Union is not happy with but the NFL and owners feel is necessary if they are to actually take safety seriously.

The move to make knee and thigh pads mandatory will affect the mobility of many players, especially wide receivers and cornerbacks that tend to dispense with the pads in favor of the ability to make more cuts and be more fluid.

A notable jaguar who has been known to play without knee and thigh pads on many occasions is cornerback Rashean Mathis. As Mathis fights to keep a roster spot against the younger, newer Aaron Ross it may be a bit tougher if he can’t pull ahead during the underwear league (OTAs and training camp).

We don’t know how good wide receiver Justin Blackmon would be with or without pads at the NFL level, but you’ve got to think that with every other receiver who ran a faster 40 yard dash or other drill being forced to wear pads, Blackmon’s stock just rose ever so slightly.

No matter how it’s looked at though, nobody will be moving quite as well as Donald Driver just did on Dancing with the Stars.

The way I see it, there are a few approaches the Jaguars can take with the wide receiving corps they have from last year. They can A) Keep Mike Thomas, add some young blood through the draft, and patch some holes in free agency; B) Clean house and start from scratch, targeting free agent receivers and high quality college prospects; or C) Bring in a pair of top tier, old free agent types who are well respected and draft 3-4 potential wide receivers in the draft.

If you are remotely familiar with my opinion on the failings of the Jaguars’ receiving corps, then you know I’m more inclined to go with option B as Gene Smith hasn’t done a very good job at recruiting college talent at the position (in my humble opinion) and could use a full revamp.

However, recently I was looking around at some potential players that could be jettisoned by their teams due to their high price tag and declining production. Two names really popped out in my mind. Hines Ward and Donald Driver. (more…)
