Whether it’s a new talent like DeWayne Walker or a known commodity like Todd Wash, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been bringing in new eyes and passionate people to coach their team as they rebuild. Wash, Walker, Terry Richardson, and George Yarno all spoke with the local Jacksonville media over the past few days and expressed how they got to the Jags and how things look for the Jaguars going forward.

A common theme among the four position coaches is that the Jags have something special that brought them to Jacksonville. A large part of that is the upbeat nature of head coach Gus Bradley. Wash has been with Bradley for years and knows how he plans and what he can expect from the Jags’ HC, meanwhile someone like Walker comes in trusting the word of Seattle head coach Pete Carroll that Bradley is the real deal. Through it all, Bradley, GM David Caldwell, and owner Shahid Khan have been able to market Jacksonville as the place to be.

The biggest part of all the interviews with the coaches may be the roster evaluation. With a new regime comes turnover and that does not bode well for players who are on the bubble – which is pretty much everyone from the Gene Smith era. Quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo spoke about the physical tools that Blaine Gabbert brings to the position and potential for improvement, but also spoke about upgrading when they can at the position. Wash made it known that the Jags do not have a premier pass rusher when he said that it is impossible to win without one and that it is still a need for the team. Walker and Richardson may be in the best position with a multitude of defensive backs to look at for Walker and Maurice Jones-Drew for Richardson to work with.

Despite the obvious deficiencies for the Jaguars, it looks as though the staff being brought in is up for the task. There is a feel of development with the Jaguars that was absent from the Mike Mularkey regime. Some good coaches were brought in under Mularkey, like wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, but it felt more disjointed and less cohesive than the Bradley regime thus far. And that’s a major key to success, just ask Yarno and his offensive line philosophy.

New defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker sat down to talk with local media on February 15th and shed some light on how the Jaguars are looking from the perspective of a third party. Walker couldn’t have said anything better.

This all relates to GM David Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley. According to Walker, the head coach at New Mexico State from 2009-2012, it was really the way they sold the organization to him. ”David Caldwell, the owner, and Gus, had a chance to meet with them and they sold me that this organization was on the rise,” Walker said when asked about leaving his head coaching position for a smaller position in the NFL. While I think his 10-40 record as a head coach at NMSU may have had something to do with it as well, it is likely that Bradley was instrumental in bringing Walker’s talents to Jacksonville.

Walker coached with Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll when they were both with the New England Patriots and called him up to see if Bradley was for real. Once again, Carroll gave a rousing endorsement for Bradley and the work he will be doing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Walker could be a big “get” for the Jaguars largely because a lot of Bradley’s defense in Seattle was dependent upon strong secondary play, a Pete Carroll specialty. Walker may be “Carroll-light,” having coached defensive backs for Carroll in New England and USC. It would be nice to see Dwight Lowery, Dawan Landry, Mike Harris, and Derek Cox really play at their top potential. If the Jags are on the rise and Walker is a major part of that, then we may just see it.

Position coaches don’t get the big hullabaloo that coordinators and head coaches do, yet they can be some of the most influential people in shaping an athlete. Some of them, like the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Greg Olson, make the jump up to coordinators. Some of them never get much further than their specific position group. Yet everyone starts somewhere. If you’re like Jerry Sullivan you may spend almost your entire career as a position coach and make a name for yourself as a very good specialist.

Sullivan (wide receivers) and linebackers coach Mark Duffner were retained by the Jaguars earlier this week. Now, with other coaches leaving the Jags, they have added three others.

DeWayne Walker has been hired to replace Tony Oden as the secondary coach for the Jags. Walker has most recently served as the head coach at New Mexico State where he struggled to put together a winning program. Walker has been the defensive coordinator for UCLA before that and the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins, New York Giants, and New England Patriots among other college programs.

To replace Olson (Oakland’s new OC) the Jaguars have brought in Frank Scelfo. Scelfo was a high school quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for years before moving up to join the staff at Tulane. There he moved from tight ends to the quarterback coach position and offensive coordinator. Most recently he coached the University of Arizona Wildcats at the quarterback position. He brings years and years of experience at a lower level to the Jaguars, but is unproven in the big leagues.

New offensive line coach George Yarno has been brought in to replace Andy Heck (Kansas City Chiefs). Yarno was an NFL guard for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, and the Houston Oilers before turning to coaching. He has been doing offensive line work since 1991 and has worked with the Bucs and Detroit Lions in the NFL at offensive line. He is coming over to the Jaguars after being with the Lions since 2009.

As the staff continues to be filled out, we’ll be sure to keep reporting about which coaches will be coming to the Jags. So far it looks like a mix of proven and less proven guys, but that doesn’t mean that the talent is not necessarily there for those who are joining the Jags’ ranks.
