The Jaguars have claimed yet another ex-Patriot off waivers today by being awarded DT Kyle Love. Love’s recent diagnosis of Type-2 Diabetes has been all in the media as of late, but it is something that has not scared David Caldwell. Playing in 41 games, 25 of them starts since being un-drafted in 2010 out of Mississippi State, Love has been a solid player for the Patriots.
Love is a big bodied DT, weighing in at 315 pounds and 6’1″ tall, and joins fellow ex-Pat Brandon Deaderick to what is becoming a crowded Jaguars defensive line. After last season’s less than stellar defensive play, especially on the defensive line, any addition is a good addition. Deaderick and Love (which I must say is a pretty badass DL combo) are two players that fit the mold of Caldwell that are young and have great upside. Both of these players have playoff experience, including a Superbowl appearance, experience that this young defense can use.
As it stands now, the Jaguars have nine defensive ends on the roster: Jason Babin, Andre Branch, Ryan Davis, Brandon Deaderick, Pannel Egboh, J.D. Griggs, Paul Hazel, Austen Lane, Jeremy Mincey and now Tyson Alualu. In addition, there are seven defensive tackles on the roster: T.J. Barnes, Abry Jones, Sen’Derrick, Roy Miller, Jeris Pendleton, D’Anthony Smith and now Kyle Love. Now, half of these players are camp bodies, but there is some huge potential here. However, I think the signing of both Love and Deaderick spells the end of D’Anthony Smith’s less than impressive performance on the field (which has been a total of 8 games since 2010!).
Staying true to his word, Gus Bradley has certainly brought in competition on the DL.

Former Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith left Jacksonville as the scape goat of a failing franchise. The constant underwhelming top 10 draft picks, lost seasons, and unfulfilled promises fell squarely on his shoulders. For the most part I agree with it, as I spent much of the last two years publically calling for his head on a stake. Now the Jags have David Caldwell and the fan base is more ramped up with excitement than they have been in years. The media seems to be covering the Jaguars a lot more than usual. Coupled with the new logo and uniforms, the initial grades of the team’s 2013 draft are very high from ESPN’s Mel Kiper to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.

Before we crown David Caldwell the savior of Jacksonville, we should all dust off the archives of 2009 and compare the Jaguars then and now:

Year: 2009

Year: 2013

Previous Record: 5-11

Previous Record: 2-14

GM: Gene SmithNFL Experience:

-1994-1999: Jaguars College Scout

-2000-2007: Jaguars Director of College Scouting

-2008: Jaguars Executive Director of College and Pro Personnel

GM: David CaldwellNFL Experience:

-1996-1997: Panthers Scouting Assistant

-1998-2007: Colts Area Scout

-2008-2011: Falcons Director of College Scouting

-2012: Falcons Director of Player Personnel

Plan for team: Get younger

Plan for team: Bring in competition

First Draft Pick: Eugene Monroe, LT

First Draft Pick: Luke Joeckel, LT

Coach: Jack Del RioPrevious Employment:

-Carolina Panthers Defensive Coordinator. Took a 30th ranked defense to 2nd ranked defense.

-Jaguars head coach since 2003

Coach: Gus BradleyPrevious Employment:

-Seattle Seahawks Defensive Coordinator. Took 27th ranked defense to 4th ranked defense.

- No previous NFL head coaching experience

Best Record as GM: 8-8 (2010). No playoff appearances.

Best Record as GM: TBD

Now there are some clear differences. Caldwell’s team has a new coaching staff, ownership, and even logo and uniforms. But Shad Khan isn’t going to step on the field any more than the Jags previous owner Wayne Weaver did. The new logo isn’t going to catch any more touchdowns than the old one did.

While many differences are apparent, there are some similarities between the 2009 team and 2013 team. Both drafted rookies expected to start immediately, which is always a gamble. Both have a glaring weakness at pass rush. Gene Smith chose to draft some secondary players and rely on previously drafted defensive ends Derek Harvey and Quinton Groves to improve. David Caldwell Chose to draft secondary players and rely on previously drafted Andre Branch and recently acquired Jason Babin.

Did Gene’s plan work? Hell no.

Will David’s? Man, I hope so.

-Lionel Joel

The Man Crush. It’s the feeling we get when we think a dude is really cool. A sense of admiration or appreciation for a particular trait or skill set. David Caldwell hasn’t hidden his feelings for Denard Robinson. It’s public knowledge that he’s followed his collegiate career for some time. And the Jaguars, in particular Caldwell, seem more excited about their 5th round pick above all others. Although I’d have to guess Gus Bradley is equally excited about their number 2 pick, Johnathan Cyprian. Caldwell recently stated in an interview that the Jags would like to get Robinson 10 – 15 snaps per game. This gets me excited. Any kind of action is good, be it touches, looks or returns can only raise his stock.

Robinson keeps getting associated with “Dynasty” leagues, but it could be sooner rather than later he’s mentioned as a Flex or RB2. Although it might not seem promising for the future of MJD, it could be for the future of the Jaguars and Fantasy Footballers alike. Robinson is a football player. His position will get sorted out in time, but if he’s getting 10-15 snaps a game then that may happen sooner rather than later.
