With the Jaguars’ final regular season game looming against the Titans this weekend, fans are actually looking ahead to what’s around the corner – Black Monday. Luke started the “merciful end” theme and I’ll continue it. Yes, it seems the Jaguars will once again be part of the coaching carousel this offseason but this time with another vacancy at GM. The last viewing of Gene Smith’s systematic destruction of the Jaguars’ roster will be in Tennessee tomorrow and he’ll likely be packing his office up early Monday.

This was in week 10.
This was in week 10. The fans have been ready for a while now.

We’ll have plenty of time to talk about all the upcoming changes to Jacksonville’s front office this offseason, so let’s focus on the last game of the worst season in Jaguars’ history.

Dec 16, 2012; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon (14) celebrates a touchdown catch over Miami Dolphins defensive back R.J. Stanford (not pictured) but it was called back on a penalty in the second quarter at Sun Life Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Justin Blackmon will have 100+ yards and a touchdown: FACT

With Cecil Shorts shut down for the season, the Jaguar receiving corps now consists of Blackmon, Jordan Shipley, Toney Clemons, Jerrell Jackson, and Mike Brown. Fair to say Blackmon is probably going to get an overwhelming amount of targets. If Chad Henne plays decent for two quarters, Blackmon should be able to put together a solid game and set up nicely for next season.

Chad Henne will have at least 2 turnovers: FACT

Why? Because Chad Henne isn’t very good and he’s playing behind a very poor offensive line that gave up 7 sacks the last time they played the Titans. Any momentum Henne had from his monster performance against Houston has completely disintegrated and he has absolutely no reason to believe he has any kind of advantage for the starting job in 2013.

The Jaguars will hold Chris Johnson under 100 yards: FICTION

The Jacksonville defense did a good job holding Johnson to 80 rushing yards in their last meeting (bumped up by a 31 yard gash). With Daryl Smith back in the lineup, the Jaguars should be even more stout against the run, right? Well, Daryl Smith didn’t really play at a high level in his return last week. The Jaguars have a tendency to play well and then give up a ton of yards in the third quarter. Don’t be surprised to see Johnson break a big run or two in the second half.

Kendall Wright will have a play over 20 yards : FACT

The Jaguars have had their troubles this season with shifty players in open space (see: Wes Welker, CJ Spiller, etc.) and Wright has been one of the more productive rookie receivers this season. Justin Blackmon has a significant lead in passing yards, but Wright has a 4 reception lead. It’ll be interesting to see if either of these players is thinking about their competing statistics in an otherwise meaningless game.

While most fans look forward to Sunday and dread Monday, Jacksonville fans couldn’t be more hopeful for what will happen starting Monday. The organization is in need of sweeping changes - a full-measure is the only way this franchise can be turned around. With rumors swirling about possible GM candidates, the inevitable end of the Gene Smith era is right around the corner.

Finally!

Ok, nobody’s really too excited about the last 6 games of this merciless season, especially with Chad Henne at the helm. Sure he threw for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Texans defense, but what good does that do the Jaguars? The season is already over and the likelihood that Chad Henne is the long term answer at quarterback is miniscule.

Thank you SBNation.com, for this glorious gif.

Thank you SBNation.com, for this glorious gif.

Nonetheless, Jaguar fans actually had something to cheer for last week. If Henne can make the team look competitive down the stretch and allow some of the younger players to showcase their ability, then there are plenty of reasons to watch. Even this week against the Titans.

November 18, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon (14) attempts to catch a pass during the first quarter as Houston Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson (25) defends at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-US PRESSWIRE

Justin Blackmon will have 100+yards receiving: FACT

Justin Blackmon finally had his breakout game last week (boy did he ever) and he should have plenty of chances to stay hot against a Titans defense that ranks 26th in pass defense. A big difference between Henne and Gabbert is that Henne is willing to make some risky throws and let his receivers make a play. Blackmon did that a few times last week and had a ton of yards after the catch. Blackmon and Cecil Shorts have a chance to cement themselves as a one-two punch at the receiver position for a long time.

Chris Johnson will have 100+ yards rushing: FICTION

Jacksonville did a good job holding Arian Foster to 90 yards last week and has been good in spurts against the run recently. The defense is giving up almost 140 yards on the ground a game, but I expect them to sellout against the run this week to prevent a big play from Chris Johnson. The defense is going to need a good effort from Austen Lane and Jeremy Mincey, since Johnson has been on a tear for the last few weeks.

Chad Henne will have over 300+ yards passing: FICTION

As I indicated earlier, Henne got away with a lot of throws last week. He also started cooling off down the stretch, finishing only 16 of 33 with a 48.5% completion percentage. The Titans aren’t quite the offensive machine the Texans are, so Henne won’t need to drop back and sling it so much. Unless Jalen Parmele and the rushing offense is completely ineffective, don’t expect Henne to throw it as much as he did last week.

Rashad Jennings has been a disappointment the entire regular season. Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

Rashad Jennings has been a disappointment the entire regular season.

Even with a slight improvement at the quarterback position, the Jaguars seem overmatched. Regardless, the Jaguars only have a few more chances to try to get a win at home and this might be their best opportunity. Expect a close game that’ll come down to the last drive, and hopefully a Scobee field goal.

In a trend that is becoming familiar for the AFC South, the Jaguars lost while the rest of the teams continued to progress. While the Jags looked better than any point since week one they fell in overtime to the Oakland Raiders. Meanwhile the Texans, Titans, and Colts all overcame hard fought battles and came away with wins.

The Texans proved that defense still wins championships and that the Ravens’ new offensive focus simply isn’t enough against top-tier defenses. Source: Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

The Texans had one of their toughest tests of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are without some impact players on defense, mostly notable Ray Lewis, but have been relying on their offense to compete in games this season. This wasn’t enough against the vaunted Houston defense, however, and they came up short. Houston managed to limit the Baltimore offense to a meager 13 points including scoring one safety against the offense. The defense dominated the game, picking up two interceptions off Joe Flacco (one for a touchdown), racking up four sacks, and one forced fumble. The offense was no slouch either, Arian Foster had 98 yards and two touchdowns to complement Matt Schaub’s stellar 23/37 for 298 yards and two scores. Of note is that four of Houston’s six scoring drives (not counting the safety or interception return) were for less than 60 yards.

Indianapolis eked out a close one over the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were tied in the fourth quarter but couldn’t catch up after Adam Vinatieri kicked a field goal with 8:34 left in the game. Andrew Luck went 16/29 for 186 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. No Indianapolis runner had 100 yards in a game that featured two very mediocre offensive showings. The Browns defense did enough to keep the game within reach, but even with three sacks, a fumble forced, and Brandon Weeden’s 264 yards and two touchdowns the Browns just couldn’t seem to keep pace.

Almost exactly the opposite of the Colts game, the Titans traveled to Buffalo and found themselves in a shootout. Chris Johnson has officially found his legs and did the primary offensive work for Tennessee. Behind his 195 yards (10.8 yards per carry) and two touchdowns the Titans were able to turn to the air when they wanted to and be effective when running or passing. Despite three touchdowns and 225 yards from Ryan Fitzpatrick and a combined 140 yards from C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson the showing wasn’t enough to top the Titans. The final Titans drive in a previously scoreless fourth quarter was capped off with a 15 yard touchdown to Nate Washington from Matt Hasselbeck who finished 22/33 for 205 yards and the lone game-winning touchdown.

The Jaguars had a winnable matchup turn sour when both Maurice Jones-Drew and Blaine Gabbert were forced to leave the game in the first half. The team lost MJD for next week against the Packers as well as losing all offensive production in the game after Gabbert left. Chad Henne showed he wasn’t the answer, failing to post 100 yards against a defense that had allowed Gabbert to post 110 yards and a touchdown while going 8/12 in a quarter and a half of work. While nursing a 14 point lead, the Jaguars were unable to stave off the second-half ugly surge from the Raiders to win it. The game went into overtime after two failed drives late in the final minute to by Henne to get the Jags in field position for a Josh Scobee field goal. The lone statistical positive for the Jaguars is the two sacks they had against Carson Palmer, thus almost doubling their previous season total.

Here are your AFC South Scores:

Houston Texans vs Baltimore Ravens: 43-13

Tennessee Titans @ Buffalo Bills: 35-34

Indianapolis Colts vs Cincinnati Browns: 17-13

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Oakland Raiders: 23-26 OT
