2012 was a season with training wheels on it for Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan. He kept the extender GM Gene Smith from his predecessor Wayne Weaver and he trusted Smith to show him the ropes in the NFL.

It’s tough coming into the NFL and building a winner with no prior experience.

Khan, a successful business man, knows that having experts around you to help you when entering a new market is crucial. It may have taken a season, but it is painfully obvious that Smith simply was not an expert that he needed (or an expert). Khan is moving past Smith and into his future by firing him.

Cutting his teeth on the franchise’s worst record ever (2-14), Khan knows that his team must get better. He firmly placed himself and his fans in the same boat by saying,

Our organization’s business unit had an extremely impressive year and I anticipate even better days ahead in 2013 and beyond. But we all understand this is a football business above all else. With that, I’m determined to find the right man to lead our football operations, someone who shares my vision, understands the commitment we will demand, and is qualified and ready to seize this opportunity. That search begins today.

The key thing to take away from Khan is that we are all expecting better. We understand that, as a business, the Jaguars are putting forward and inferior product. For an owner who has been mysteriously quiet during the season, it is nice to hear him speak strongly about his decision to fire Smith and move past the hideous 2012 season.

Khan knows that the help he needed for the 2012 season is not the same help he will need for 2013 and beyond.

It’s time the Jaguars got a good general manager to go with an owner who is no longer a rookie.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have removed General Manager Gene Smith from his duties with the team following the franchise’s worst record ever. Smith has been the “mastermind” behind the Jaguars since 2009 and has managed to leave the team with very little talent to fill the roster for the coming years. Whether it was picking some players too early (Tyson Alualu, Bryan Anger) or straight up whiffing on some players (Blaine Gabbert, Eben Britton), Smith simply did not perform well enough to justify bringing him back.

The Jaguars are in a rough spot because of Smith.

Owner Shahid Khan cited a need to get better for the fans of the Jaguars. If only for that reason, the Jaguars needed to make this move. Smith may make sound business sense (the team didn’t black out a game yet again this year) but he simply was not delivering the Super Bowl Championship that the fanbase craves and, according to Khan, deserves.

Smith has had only a few good roster moves during his tenure as general manager. Left tackle Eugene Monroe should be a cornerstone for the Jags for many more years, safeties Dwight Lowery and Dawan Landry provide strong stopgaps until premium players are brought in by the Jags, and linebacker Paul Posluszny has been marvelous at middle linebacker.

Tying his star to a quarterback was the failing move for Smith. While Gabbert has been a bust thus far, there is always the potential for development with a young, raw quarterback. A young, raw quarterback was not what this franchise needed or craved. When David Garrard was still playing quarterback for the Jaguars it was an alright move, though by no means a perfect transition. Rather than getting a playmaker that instantly made the Jaguars a threat on every down, Smith made the Jaguars a limping offense in that one move.

It’s about time the Jaguars moved past Smith.

No longer is it In Gene We Trust.

Black Monday is like a mini-holiday for those of us who love football. For Jacksonville Jaguars fans who are tired of seeing their team fail year after year it is like Christmas. Instead of getting a present, Black, Monday results in the removal of a number of personnel, administrative, and coaching minds from their respective teams. Whether it’s Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt, or others, Black Monday is a holiday to be eagerly anticipated for the teams in the lower end of the league.

The Jaguars are decidedly one of those teams.

GM Gene Smith and Head Coach Mike Mularkey are prime candidates to be fired and this will make more than one fan happy. As it all unfolds we will analyze the moves and see what happens for the Jags.
