Fansided.com’s weekly mock draft has come out again and, surprise, surprise, the Jacksonville Jaguars are going with a pass rusher. And, surprise, surprise, it’s Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State.

The frequently-mocked defensive end has been falling on some draft boards since the NFL Scouting Combine because he did not perform as well as more athletic pass rushers Barkevious Mingo of Louisiana State University and Dion Jordan of Oregon. While Werner could still very well be the pick for the Jaguars at number two overall, it would have to be a tough decision by GM Dave Caldwell, who has the opportunity to pick Werner based on how well of a pro he will transition into or pick a more raw athletic talent.

In analyzing the pick, writer Josh Hill writes:

The Jaguars are under new leadership from top to bottom but don’t think that means they’re going to take a quarterback. The Jaguars need a pass rusher to come off the edge and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Werner is hands down the best edge rusher in this years class and he’s quickly risen to the top of the draft. Werner is discussion for the No. 1 pick, so Jacksonville’s getting a stud in the former Seminole.

While I think that Werner is probably not the hands-down best pass rusher in the draft (really, the field is pretty competitive) he may be the “safest” pick at second overall – if there really are any safe picks for the Jags this early in such a tight draft.

Defensive end Jeremy Mincey is taking at stab at armchair (field?) GM and suggests that the Jacksonville Jaguars should select Florida State defensive end in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Wener has been the most consistently mocked player to the Jaguars since mock draft season hit and with the need for a more consistent pass rush (read: any pass rush at all) it isn’t shocking that Mincey wants some help along the defensive line. But part of that problem is Mincey.

Mincey signed a nice sized deal to stay with Jacksonville after testing free agency last offseason. The common thought was that Mincey was a late bloomer and could turn his eight sacks from 2011 into 10+ in 2012. He finished the season with three sacks and was a non-factor in a number of games.

Mincey revealed his desired pick while talking to Chris Porter of WTLV-TV. ”Probably Bjoern Werner from Florida State. I like that kid. I admire his work ethic. I admire his style of play. I think he’ll be a nice guy to pass the torch down to a few years from now. It’s just a good pick. I think he’ll fit right in,” said Mincey when describing who he wants the Jaguars to draft.

No offense to Mincey, but I don’t want someone who fits in with the way the Jaguars are. I want someone who stands out. I don’t want someone to receive the sputtering pass rushing torch that Mincey currently carries. I want a player who lights his own torch that shines much brighter. There’s more to football than a good work ethic and being a nice guy. We had to many of those guys come to Jacksonville while Gene Smith was general manager. Judging by the current state of things, it didn’t do us too well.

I won’t be screaming bloody murder if the Jags do draft Werner, but I think there are other players who will really stand out and completely alter the anemic pass rush of recent years. We need a trend setter, not someone who fits in.

The linebackers and defensive linemen took to the field to workout on Monday. Missing among them was top defensive tackle prospect Star Lotulelei, due to a heart condition, which left some open room for any interior defensive linemen to really steal the spotlight. Did anybody do it? Who improved their draft stock during day three of workouts.

Here are your winners for day five of the combine:

Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon

Jordan moved so well during his workouts that he may have secured his place in the top-10 or snuck into the top-5 of the draft. Jordan looked unstoppable during his workouts and proved that he is a versatile, big player who moves like someone much smaller and quicker. He could be a better prospect than the game tape is already saying.

Sio Moore, LB, Connecticutt

Moore has been having a pretty productive run up to the NFL Draft. He may have secured a second round pick with an impressive combine, following a strong East-West Shrine Game. Moore didn’t look like he was going to be a surprise first round pick, but you never know. If he continues to perform well, especially at his Pro Day, teams may continue to raise him on their draft boards.

Bjoern Werner, DE/LB, Florida State

Werner rises by virtue of Damontre Moore falling. The two have been pretty neck and neck during the lead-up to the combine, but with a disappointing performance in Indianapolis, Moore will fall a little behind Werner. Werner could very well be taken at number two or three overall and is beginning to occupy some pretty rare air compared to his competition.

Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist

One of my personal favorites heading up to the draft, Hunt is a physical freak who was expected to have a good combine. Which he did. He was a top performer in the 40 yard dash and the bench press, which is particularly impressive because of his massive 6’8″ frame. Originally an early second or late first round prospect, I can see Hunt rising on some draft boards purely because of his raw potential.
