General Manager Gene Smith said the team expects Jones-Drew to fulfill his contract – two more years and $9 million.  Smith had a hard line stance almost as strong as Spielman’s in Minnesota when wide receiver Percy Harvin left camp for one day.  Smith doesn’t have the same strict “we negotiate with core players when they have one year left” approach as Spielman, but he made himself clear when he said Jones-Drew wouldn’t be getting what he wanted.

Jones-Drew’s response?  He is optimistic he will get a new deal done before the season starts.  Yes, you read that right.

Maybe Jones-Drew knows something we don’t.  Maybe Jones-Drew thinks he has an edge we haven’t heard of.  I don’t know.  He seems to think that Smith will budge.

As Adam Schein noted today at FOX Sports, Jones-Drew doesn’t hold the hammer in this situation.  He doesn’t have the high ground and his bargaining position is much weaker than he thinks.

Yet he persists.  Paul Jackiewicz has Jones-Drew recently saying, “Hopefully we can have something where we can be able to get out there and play in the future.”

I say play the next tow years and honor your contract.  It’s what they’ve already paid you to do.
