2017 NFL Draft: Will the Jacksonville Jaguars surprise?
Every year the Jacksonville Jaguars do a nice job of disguising their draft plan. With only a few weeks left here are a few moves that I think the Jags could make on draft day that would surprise.
Draft a quarterback
It has been no secret the Jags have struggled to find consistent quarterback play. If the Jags top brass want to push competition at this position they could look towards this year’s draft to do so. Some mock drafts have the Jags potentially taking Clemson’s Deshaun Watson. However keep an eye on Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman or California’s Davis Webb in the later rounds.
Trade down in the first round
The Jags have a top five pick again for the fifth year in a row. The production the Jags have to show for those picks is limited at best. If another team is willing to trade up for the fourth pick then I expect the Jags take the deal. Trading down would allow the Jags to acquire more draft picks and could bundle those to target a specific player. While the Jags currently draft fourth there is still time for the Jags to surprise us and trade picks with another team.
Don’t draft a defensive lineman

With the departure of Jared Odrick, Sen’Derrick Marks, and Roy Miller the Jags suddenly have reduced depth on the defensive line. The reason this would be a surprise is because of the current need at the position. In a draft with talents like Jonathan Allen and Solomon Thomas it would be hard for the Jags to pass. However those players are expected to garner a top ten pick. Will the Jags take another lineman that high in the first round? If the Jags don’t pull the trigger on one of those players than expect the Jags to target members of the defensive line later in the draft. After all is said and done it would be a surprise if the Jags don’t add to the line.
The NFL draft is getting closer each day. It’s not a matter of if the Jags are going to surprise us but when. Whether it be a new quarterback to add competition to the roster or a trade on draft day this April the Jags will have us holding our breaths.
