Blake Bortles a Top "Backup" Quarterback

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been adamant about starting veteran Chad Henne in week 1 over first round pick Blake Bortles. This means Blake Bortles is technically the backup quarterback for the time being. While the validity of this claim and for how long it might be true can be debated, it does beg the question – where does Bortles rank among backup quarterbacks?

OK, so that’s not really too important in the grand scheme of things, but the bros over at Around the League on NFL.com went ahead and ranked all 32 backup quarterbacks anyway. Blake Bortles came in 2nd, behind only Michael Vick.

Bortles made more NFL throws in the preseason opener than the rest of the early-round rookies combined. …

Bortles did look really good in his first appearance as a professional footballer, but he has a long way to go, and hopefully he won’t be a “backup” for too long.

For old times sake, and to make everyone here feel better, I went ahead and looked at where former Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert landed. Predictably and hilariously, Gabbert ranked dead last.

32. Blaine GabbertSan Francisco 49ers

The Gabbert Zone reached new lows in the 49ers‘ preseason opener, as the former Jaguars quarterback managed a paltry 1.8 yards per attempt — down from his career average of 5.6.

Thankfully, we don’t have to deal with that nightmare anymore.
