Offseason Analysis - Cecil Shorts III

After highlighting Justin Blackmon’s progress in my previous analysis, let’s delve into my new favorite Jaguar – Cecil Shorts III.

While he struggled mightily in his rookie season, Shorts earned enough playing time in 2012 to almost break 1,000 yards. No Jaguar has had 1,000 yards receiving in a season since Jimmy Smith in 2005, and quite frankly no receiver had really flashed or excited the fan base since Jimmy Smith until Shorts burst onto the scene last year.

Shorts had a penchant for making huge plays, something the Jaguars offense has been lacking since Maurice Jones-Drew was in his prime. While his yards per catch statistic was one of the league’s best, his yards per target statistic is almost more impressive.

Ignoring the huge spike caused by Shorts’ heroic game winning touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts, one can consistently see Shorts hovered around 10 yards a target in almost every game. For the year, he averaged over 9 yards a target – that means Shorts was good for close to a first down almost every time the ball was thrown his way.

Had Shorts not gotten two concussions last season, he assuredly would have broken the 1,000 yard mark. In a new offense with a few more weapons added to the receiving core, Shorts should be poised for another good season and could potentially challenge for a pro bowl spot if he can extrapolate his performance from last season into 16 games.
