Star Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew has been charged with misdemeanor battery following an altercation in St. Augustine, Florida. The incident reportedly took place at a restaurant. Police have said that Jones-Drew knocked out a security guard at the Conch House Restaurant and Marina.
The incident took place at 8:00 pm EST.
The police report indicates that Jones-Drew struck the security guard while he was involved in stopping a friend from touching a woman. One blow to the left side of the face and the guard was unconscious.
This all makes the return of MJD from his injury last season much more difficult. All eyes are now on him as the team, the NFL, and the police sort through the details. With an already headline filled offseason involving the suspension of receiver Justin Blackmon, the Jaguars continue to find themselves in a negative light with their more visible players. All of this while the young, new players from the draft and free agency continue to impress on the field.
It is unfortunate to see the team leader involved in an altercation such as this, but it happens. The team will likely move past it. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the entire situation is that the security guard was floored with one punch. While violence should not be condoned, it certainly fit with the physical nature of MJD’s running style.
