NFL Free Agency begins on March 12 at 4:00 p.m. eastern. The new NFL rules, however, dictate that NFL teams and players can begin negotiating on March 9th. While most teams have been negotiating before the March 12 beginning anyway, this formal acknowledgement of negotiating before March 12 is a move in the right direction for the NFL.
Players can’t be officially offered their contracts until March 12 at 4:00 pm eastern. It will be interesting to see how quickly the first “tier” of free agency players accept their contracts. Free agency could move quicker than it has in past seasons, as a result. Expect a number of contracts to be signed early on and then the beginning of negotiations for those second “tier” players to be started earlier than usual.
This could mean that the Jaguars are active early in free agency simply because a lot of their targets will quickly rise to the top of free agency at their positions because the top tier players are already signed and gone.
