Shamarko Thomas was having himself a pretty good combine…and then this happened:

(h/t) The Big Lead

To be entirely honest, the Syracuse product had himself a pretty good combine despite the faceplant.  His faceplant performance was the fastest 40 yard dash among safeties (4.44), tied for first in the vertical at 40.5 inches, was just one inch behind the leaders in the broad jump at 11 feet and one inch, and he posted the best performance in bench press with 28 reps as well.  For those who didn’t take notice of Thomas before the faceplant, they are noticing now.

The Scouting Combine was Thomas’ with or without the faceplant.  He is a little short at just 5’9″ but he plays bigger.  He moved well in drills and definitely improved his draft stock with his workouts.  If there ever is a player with a chip on his shoulder, it’s this guy.  When both of his parents passed away Thomas had to lead his family of six children.  This man is playing football for more than just himself.  He’ll make a team in the mid rounds very happy they picked him.

Sometimes it takes something a little wacky to really get your name out there though.

I read about Thomas a few weeks ago. I didn’t watch a lot of Syracuse football last year so I’m not too sure what his tape looks like. I definitely liked what I saw from him on Tuesday though. Last I checked, the Jags need depth at safety and judging from Thomas’ combine, he’s much more athletic than Prosinski.
