The Jacksonville Jaguars may need (some could argue that they will no matter what) a new outside linebacker if Daryl Smith leaves in free agency. Cornelius Washington has really been impressing at the NFL Scouting Combine and I think that the Jags should take notice.
While Washington’s numbers while at Georgia aren’t the most impressive, his 4.55 40 yard dash, his 36 bench press reps, 39 inch vertical, and 128 inch broad jump were all among top marks for linebackers. Washington is a very strong player who was lost amid rotation at Georgia. He’s getting all kinds of attention now.
Washington may not get himself into the first round but he is piquing some interest from NFL teams. I would love to see him in black and teal going forward. The linebacking corps was deficient throughout the 2012 season – partly due to Smith’s injury – and the Jags will have to make an upgrade at some point. With offensive or defensive line being likely picks in the first round, Washington could be a pickup after day one of the draft.
