When Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley was hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach he brought in his old head coach from North Dakota State University, Bob Babich, to be the defensive coordinator. Babich has served as a defensive coordinator before, with the Chicago Bears from 2007-2009. The Bears defense took a step backward during Babich’s time as DC.
Naturally there was some trepidation among Jaguar fans when Babich was hired. But there was always the possibility that Bradley would retain play calling responsibilities himself.
Jaguars.com has reported that this won’t be happening. Just like in Chicago, Babich will handle the play calling responsibilities under a defensive minded head coach. Hopefully Bradley will be able to influence superior performance from his longtime friend and colleague.
I trust GM Dave Caldwell and I trust Bradley, therefore I trust Babich despite what I have learned based on his past performance. It would be nice to see progress after the Jags faltered in 2012 after a very good 2011.
