In Kansas City, Missouri, fourth year player Jovan Belcher committed suicide at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility shortly after killing his girlfriend. Belcher was a linebacker out of Maine. He had started ten games this season before committing suicide.
Police say that that they connected Belcher to the murder of his girlfriend after receiving a call from the victim’s mother who informed the police that her daughter had been shot multiple times. Upon receiving a call from the Chiefs’ practice facility the police connected the suspect’s description to that of Belcher.
Belcher and his girlfriend had recently been arguing. They have a child together as well.
This incident is a sad day for the NFL and for the Chiefs. The Chiefs have been struggling to 1-10 record and have experienced fan upheaval in light of their disappointing play. Despite all of this, Belcher was thanking general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel for all they had done before he shot himself at the practice facility.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and the perpetrators families as well as the Chiefs organization in such a trying time.
