Keith Toston has been re-signed by the Jaguars for running back depth entering the game against the Green Bay Packers. With the Montell Owens injury and Maurice Jones-Drew out multiple weeks with a sprained foot the team needs to turn to a player who knows the offense and proved to be effective during the preseason and training camp.
It came as a shock to myself and a few others when the Jags chose to cut Toston in favor of Jalen Parmele before the season began. While Parmele can be a special teams player, Toston clearly outplayed him at running back. It came down to a roster spot after Toston was signed to the 53-man roster before MJD returned from his holdout and made him expendable.
Toston had 171 yards on 22 carries in the preseason. The man is a powerful runner who trucked through defenders to gain yards. A particularly impressive run was a 42-yarder against the Saints when he pounded through the defense and punished defenders for even attempting to slow his progress. He had 19 attempts for 54 yards last season in 16 games with the Rams in 2010.
I personally like Toston and think if he gets the opportunity to showcase his talents he has a real opportunity to be a contributor with the Jags, especially considering their league-worst offense.
