William Middleton To Start Against Vikes

William Middleton is being called upon to start against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.  With Derek Cox’s hamstring injury continuing to aggravate him, Middleton will be forced to start.  He better make it look good.  A long time fill-in for whomever, whenever, and wherever, Middleton has been the all-around defensive back of the Jags for a while.  He was one of the top ranked nickel backs in the league last year (according to Pro Football Focus) when he saw play at the nickel but has also been used on the outside extensively when the Jags need someone to step up.

Middleton has been good, but he was absolutely decimated by Joe Flacco and Torrey Smith in the third preseason game.  While Christian Ponder is no Joe Flacco, Percy Harvin or whomever lines up opposite Middleton may get a lot of looks early to see if the cornerback has recovered from the punishment he took two weeks ago.

I think Middleton will rebound, but only time will tell.  If Christian Ponder is looking good against Middleton then the Jags may have reevaluate his use on the outside.
