Thinking about Aaron Ross today. He’s got a real opportunity to do something special for the Jaguars (Not that he didn’t do anything special for/with the Giants). With his signing the team has depth for coming seasons and a potential immediate starter this season. So, here are some thoughts I had floating through my head today:
- Ross could be better than Rashean Mathis this season
- The secondary quickly becomes a major strength of the team with his signing
- He is a multi-role player that can play inside or outside
- His ability to tackle is better than Jags secondary players of years past
- His presence frees up the safeties a bit more
- Putting the receivers on islands will free up the rest of Mel Tucker’s offense
- The team can afford to be more aggressive in base and nickel formations with him either inside or outside
- Derek Cox can play more aggressively on the other side knowing that the opposing corner can tackle well (no offense to Mathis and assuming Ross wins the other starting spot)
- Having a third strong corner on the roster makes the nickel package stronger and better against the run (if offenses do run in passing formations)
- Clint Session can be a two-down linebacker more frequently without sacrificing as much strength on the field
- Luke N. Sims
