Drew Coleman Axed: No Surprise

Today Jacksonville has cut nickel corner Drew Coleman. He was a player that was asked to play the role of nickel and stick with it, despite all the injuries the Jags had this season at the position.

The Jags have re-signed Rashean Mathis, William Middleton and also signed cornerback Aaron Ross from the Giants. They also had current starter Derek Cox on the squad as well as drafting cornerback Mike Harris in the sixth round.

It’s reported last year that the Jags believed Coleman was a one dimensional player that was assigned to the nickel, and to not go over his head by staying there. He was expendable due to the squad currently having 14 corners on the team and the fact that he commanded $1.5 million in salary. The number of corners will dwindle down in time.

My projected members of next years team:

Rashean Mathis
Derek Cox
Arron Ross
William Middleton
Mike Harris
Kevin Rutland

Sleeper Pick: Ashton Youboty

- Antonio Furgiuele

I always liked Coleman and thought he did a good job at nickel.  No offense to Youboty or Rutland, but I think Coleman as a one dimensional nickel player was/is better than a mediocre player being asked to step up and not playing the spot as well.

Also, he looks like a dinosaur in that picture….anybody else?

@LukeNSims Thats true and I think that any team would have thought that as well before making a decision. I think it was more of a business transaction than anything. Maybe they feel like these younger guys can do the job at a 1/5th of the price.
And yea, he does look like a dinosaur!
