I am ok with a Punter

The Jaguars drafted Bryan Anger, a punter from California.  I am ok with this pick.

I remember watching St. Louis play us and my jaw dropped every time Donnie Jones punted. It was a thing of beauty to see.  His punts sailed so high and so far, it pinned us back every time.  He was a hugh weapon for St. Louis.  Donnie Jones is now with the Houston Texans. You will see what I mean when you see him punt.

Now think about our Jaguars. We have a really good defense but our offense sputters.  Think about us being on our own 35 yard line and Bryan Anger comes in and nails another punt.  They are back at their 20 yard line. Our defense holds and we get the ball back at our 35 and move forward.  We get 25 more yards and Scobee comes in and nails a 45 yard field goal.  We have a weapon in Bryan Anger that sets up Scobee.

A lot of football games are decided by 3 points or less. If Bryan can flip the field and our defense holds, we can make it hard to even get field goals against us. Bryan Anger is a defensive player. A monster punt has the same effect as a sack. It denies field position. Think about the three points or less margin of victory and ask yourself, can this guy help prevent even one field goal in a game. I think he can.

This was not a bad choice. Bryan Anger is a weapon that we will appreciate and probably give us the margin of victory.  No more 14 yard punts and flip off the fans.

I like this choice. I think you will too!

    Just when we all thought Gene had put away the flask this year…

  • Jay Bailey

    I’m glad someone’s okay with this because I’m still coming to terms with it.  I really have no problem taking a punter if it’s in the 5th round or later but the third?  GM Gene has no fear…

     @Jay Bailey Earliest punter selection since 1995…Well, the world thought Oakland was crazy when they took Sebastian Janikowski in the first.  Oh, wait….

    Moves like this is what makes the Jags minor league. This was the dumbest move I’ve ever seen in the draft. A punter, in the 3rd? He would have been there in the 7th. I know some people are going to compare him to Janikowski with the Raiders……but that was an old Al Davis…..looks like it will be another long year. And I guess we still plan on having a crappy offense who cant move the ball. I understand that a punter is very important. Everybody remember how terrible and funny Matt Turk was at the beginning of last season? However; my arguement, is that THIS GUY WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE 7th! What? Did Gene Smith think Jerry Jones was going to trade up and snag this guy? Was Belichick licking his chops, hoping to recruit Anger, who would be his latest weapon in the New England scheme? NO! Because YOU DONT DRAFT A PUNTER IN THE 3RD ROUND. But hey, if you want this city and this team to live in mediocrity, lets just ignore the problems (*ahem* Gene Smith) and pretend that theres nothing wrong……

     Feel better?

  • NickelandDime

     @tkopa lol No I dont! This better be the best damn punter of all time. Its not even a lock that he’ll be good. Even if he is good, it was a gigantic reach! I guarantee there are players we passed on in the 3rd round that will end up being good football players. However; outside of that awful ignorant pick, the rest of the draft went really well for the Jaguars. I admire your composure under harsh criticism, you are a true professional (and I mean that). And I respect your opinion…..I also understand that you are trying to make sense of this pick to the average reader (ie people like me). That being said…..it was a bad move. This guy better be something special.

     @NickelandDime I hear he can pass, catch, kick field goals, run faster than MJD, and save kittens from trees!
    Oh sorry, that was superman ;)
    But seriously, I don’t think GM Gene is so crazy as to think this pick wouldn’t be ridiculed.  I think he knew what he was getting into and probably got a damn good punter.
    You’re right, he better be something special.

     I know there are guys in the third round we missed on. Which was was a sure lock to help this team in 2012? Gene Smith thinks Bryan Anger was the highest probability on the board to help us win games.  I tend to agree with him (this time).

    The guy you should be concerned with is Andre Branch, not Bryan Anger. Now there were more than a few guys in round two that could help immediately. Andre Branch may not be one of them.

     @NickelandDime This guy wouldn’t have been there in the 7th. Both CBS sports and Nfldraftscout had him as a 3-4 round draft pick. He wouldn’t have been there in the 5th. We didn’t have a 4th anymore so we took him 3rd. If you want a player, you go get him. It’s the Alualu situation all over again.

  • mdjagsfan

     @LukeNSims It was Ray Guy in the 1st and he is in the HOF

  • mdjagsfan

     @LukeNSims Nevermind. Janikowski was a 1st round pick too. Ray Guy is the only punter taken in the 1st round

  • NickelandDime

     @tkopa Theres nothing you can say that will EVER make me think this pick is ok. I agree to disagree my friend.

  • NickelandDime

     @mdjagsfan
     You know, you’re right. Because the Jags made damn sure to get a punter in the 3rd! Oh hell yeah! I wonder what pick we’ll have next year because of bonehead moves by Gene Smith…..I’m sure it will be in the top 10. Next year, I think a long snapper would be a good move in the top 10. I mean, if hes going to make an immediate impact, and if hes the BEST long snapper out there, and if CBS says he’ll go in the 3rd or 4th……I say we take that long snapper in the top 10!

  • tkopa

     @NickelandDime
     As a draft pick, I understand. But as a player, could you ever see yourself glad he is on the team?

  • tkopa

     @NickelandDime  @mdjagsfan
     You can get a good long snapper later in the draft, no reason to spend a first round selection on a long snapper.  I don’t care how good he is… YOU DON”T DRAFT A LONG SNAPPER IN ROUND ONE!!!
