@KeenanJ Agreed that it definitely needs to be addressed and Gene has realized his previous way – Don Carey/”Bargain Basement” FA’s – will not suffice. I think you see someone signed for 2-3 years with a price tag/skill level somewhere between a Considine and a Weddle.

@thehof I’m inclined to agree with you, but after the play of Carey last year, it is safe to assume that Gene has added a fair amount of importance to the position. It was so bad that it made the whole secondary look bad and it had a really negative effect on the run defense. It was never more apparent in the games against the Raiders and the Colts, when the division was on the line. McFadden made us look bad and Donald Brown shouldn’t have had a 100 yard game. Not only that, but a quality free safety would really help Cox come along. Even if it isn’t Weddle, it would be in the best interest to bring in someone proven.

They aren’t going to dismiss him, just because they think he’ll be too expensive. They’re doing their due diligence, but I gotta believe we end up being one of the low bids there. With the way free safety has been approached thus far under Gene – Reggie Nelson (traded for David Jones), Anthony Smith (traded for a pick that never came to fruition), Gerald Alexander (released), and Don Carey (converted from CB) – it just doesn’t seem like we care that much about the position to reach for a draftpick or overpay a free agent. I think this is a position where Gene believes value is the name of the game. We’ll see…
